ABRAKA, Delta State \u2013 In line with its commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and practical skill
acquisition, the Centre for Entrepreneurship Studies (CES) at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has
continued to expose students to hands-on agricultural training through the cultivation of cucumber at
the university\u2019s demonstration farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The practical exercise, which forms part of the Centre\u2019s entrepreneurship programme, provides students
with the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a real farming environment. Under the
supervision of instructors, students participated in every stage of the farming process, including land
preparation, seed planting, irrigation, weeding, pest control, and routine crop maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a visit to the farm, healthy cucumber plants were seen flourishing across the cultivated plots,
reflecting the dedication and hard work of the students. Some of the mature cucumbers harvested from
the farm demonstrated the success of the project and the effectiveness of the practical training being
offered by the Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the exercise, Chioma, a 300-level student offering CES 311, described the programme as
an eye-opening experience that has helped students appreciate agriculture as a profitable venture
rather than merely a subsistence activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, the practical sessions have improved students\u2019 understanding of modern farming
techniques and encouraged many of them to consider agribusiness as a viable career path after
graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u201cThe practical aspect of CES 311 has given us firsthand experience in cucumber cultivation. We have
learned that agriculture is not just about farming for survival but also about creating sustainable
businesses and employment opportunities. This experience has boosted my confidence and inspired me
to explore agribusiness in the future,\u201d Chioma said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that the training has also taught students the importance of teamwork, discipline, patience,
and proper farm management, stressing that the knowledge and skills acquired would enable them to
establish their own agricultural enterprises and contribute meaningfully to food production in Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The cucumber cultivation project is one of several practical initiatives introduced by the Centre for
Entrepreneurship Studies to equip undergraduates with employable and income-generating skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Through these activities, students are encouraged to become self-reliant, innovative, and capable of
creating employment opportunities for themselves and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agricultural experts have consistently identified cucumber farming as one of the most profitable areas
of vegetable production due to its relatively short maturity period, growing market demand, and
nutritional value. By exposing students to such practical ventures, the university is helping to prepare
graduates who can compete successfully in the agricultural sector while contributing to national food
security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Centre for Entrepreneurship Studies continues to integrate practical learning into its curriculum,
ensuring that graduates leave the university with both academic knowledge and hands-on experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The cucumber farming project stands as another example of Delta State University, Abraka\u2019s efforts to
bridge the gap between theory and practice while promoting entrepreneurship among students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the crops continue to mature and more harvests are expected in the coming weeks, the initiative is
expected to inspire more students to embrace agriculture as a sustainable business and an important
contributor to Nigeria\u2019s economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
