Millions of people use platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and WhatsApp for communication, education, business promotion, and entertainment. While these platforms have transformed the way people connect and share information, their negative effects, particularly on young people in Nigeria, are becoming increasingly evident.

One of the major concerns is the amount of time students spend on social media instead of focusing on their studies. It is common to find students checking their phones during lectures or spending more time scrolling through social media feeds than reading their books. Constant notifications and the desire to remain active online often distract students from their academic responsibilities, leading to poor concentration and declining academic performance.

Another significant challenge is the rapid spread of misinformation. False news and misleading information circulate quickly on social media, especially during political events, public emergencies, or national crises. Many users share stories without verifying their authenticity, creating unnecessary panic, confusion, and, in some cases, tension within communities. Responsible use of social media and fact-checking before sharing information can help reduce the spread of fake news.

Cyberbullying and online fraud also remain serious concerns. Some individuals create fake identities to scam unsuspecting users, while others use social media to harass, threaten, or publicly humiliate people. Such experiences can have lasting emotional and psychological effects, particularly on young people, leading to anxiety, low self-esteem, and social withdrawal.

In addition, social media has encouraged unhealthy comparisons among many young Nigerians. Influencers and celebrities often portray luxurious lifestyles that may not reflect reality. As a result, some young people become dissatisfied with their own lives and feel pressured to pursue wealth at all costs. In some cases, this pressure has contributed to the rise of internet fraud and other illegal activities as individuals seek to maintain an unrealistic lifestyle.

Despite these concerns, social media has made positive contributions to society. It has enabled entrepreneurs to promote their businesses, provided students with access to educational resources, and allowed individuals to stay connected with family and friends regardless of distance. Social media has also become an important platform for raising awareness about social issues, mobilising support during emergencies, and giving people a voice on matters affecting their communities.

In conclusion, although social media offers numerous benefits, its negative effects have become increasingly visible, particularly among young Nigerians. The solution is not to abandon these platforms but to use them responsibly. With proper time management, critical thinking, and responsible online behaviour, social media can remain a valuable tool for communication, learning, and personal development without taking control of people’s lives.

Social media has become an essential part of everyday life.
