To ensure maximum participation, the Faculty President met with Heads of Departments before the commencement of the programme, requesting academic flexibility.

Following the meeting, lectures were adjusted to end by noon each day, giving students enough time to participate in the scheduled activities.

The celebration opened with “Costume Day”, themed “Dress Like Your Favourite Celebrity.” Students turned out in colourful and creative outfits, portraying celebrities, fictional characters, and everyday personalities. Some dressed as mothers, pregnant women, influencers, and other symbolic figures, drawing attention from fellow students across the campus.

A 200-level Mass Communication student who dressed as a pregnant woman said her costume was inspired by the strength and resilience of mothers.

“I wanted people to appreciate the sacrifices women make. Carrying a child for nine months and going through childbirth is not easy. Motherhood is one of the greatest acts of love and care,” she said.

The second day featured a “Picnic and Karaoke Hangout” at the Campus III field near the walkway leading to Weekend Hall.

Students gathered in a relaxed atmosphere to sing, play games, interact with one another, and enjoy refreshments. Several participants also won prizes during the karaoke competitions and interactive games.

Activities continued on the third day with the “Reel Impact Movie Night and Critique” at the Theatre Arts Complex. Students watched selected films before taking part in discussions and critiques, where they analysed themes, storytelling techniques, and production quality.

The programme provided an opportunity for students to combine entertainment with practical media learning.

The fourth day was celebrated as “Sports and Jersey Day”, with students wearing jerseys representing their favourite football clubs and national teams.

Friendly sporting activities and group games created an energetic atmosphere while encouraging teamwork and strengthening relationships among students.

The week ended with a colourful “Freshers’ Party and Pageantry” held at the Old Pre-Degree Hall. The event featured performances, games, and the highly anticipated crowning of Miss and Mr. COMMESSA, recognising contestants for their confidence, intelligence, and stage presence.

Winners of various games also received prizes, including recharge cards and other gifts, adding excitement to the closing ceremony.

Speaking on the success of the programme, many students described the Students Week as a welcome break from academic activities and an opportunity to build friendships while showcasing their talents.

The 2026 COMMESSA Students Week successfully combined learning, entertainment, and social engagement, providing students with a platform to express themselves beyond the classroom.

The programme also reinforced the importance of creativity, collaboration, and active participation in departmental activities, leaving participants with memorable experiences and a stronger sense of community.

By Beltina Omonigho The Department of Mass Communication and Media Studies Students’ Association (COMMESSA) at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, recently concluded its annual Students Week, a five-day celebration that brought together students through creative, recreational, and academic activities.
