Many students come to the clinic with symptoms related to malaria, especially during periods of stress and poor environmental conditions,” Dr. Jeffery said.

He advised students to seek medical treatment promptly whenever they notice symptoms rather than resorting to self-medication, which could worsen their condition.

The doctor also stressed the importance of preventive measures, including keeping the environment clean, eliminating stagnant water around hostels and homes, and sleeping under mosquito nets.

He explained that dirty surroundings provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of infection within the campus community.

“Students should maintain clean environments, use mosquito nets, and ensure that water is properly managed to prevent mosquitoes from breeding,” he added.

Malaria remains one of the leading public health concerns in Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season when mosquito populations increase. Health experts continue to emphasize environmental sanitation and personal protection as effective ways of reducing infections.

Students have also been encouraged to balance their academic activities with adequate rest, as stress may affect the body’s ability to recover from illnesses.

The health centre further advised members of the campus community to report persistent fever, headaches, body weakness, or other malaria-related symptoms to qualified medical personnel for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Public health experts believe that collective efforts in maintaining a clean environment and increasing awareness can significantly reduce the burden of malaria among students and the wider society .

As efforts to improve students’ health continue, medical practitioners have reiterated that prevention remains the most effective strategy in combating malaria and ensuring a healthier learning environment.

By Judith Ajirioghene The management of the school health centre has raised concerns over the prevalence of malaria among students, urging them to maintain proper hygiene and take preventive measures against mosquito bites.
