While the student loan scheme has helped many students remain in school, the increasing desire among young Nigerians to relocate abroad\u2014popularly known as the \u201cJapa\u201d phenomenon\u2014continues to raise concerns about the future of the country\u2019s skilled workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent months, DELSU has been recognised as one of the institutions actively implementing the Federal Government\u2019s student loan programme. In February 2026, NELFUND announced the disbursement of \u20a6392,876,550 to DELSU, benefiting 1,854 students. The funds were released to cover tuition fees and ease the financial burden on eligible students, allowing them to continue their education without interruption. (Channels Television\ufffc)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university further demonstrated its commitment to students when it allowed beneficiaries whose loan applications had been verified or whose funds had already been disbursed to participate in the first-semester examinations for the 2025\/2026 academic session. Students were permitted to write their examinations upon presenting proof of their verified or disbursed status on the NELFUND platform. The decision received national commendation from NELFUND, which described it as a student-centred policy that ensured no qualified student was denied the opportunity to take examinations because of financial challenges. Rising inflation, increasing educational expenses, and the high cost of living have made it difficult for many parents and guardians to finance university education. The availability of interest-free loans has enabled many students to remain focused on their studies instead of worrying about tuition payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these positive developments, the \u201cJapa\u201d trend remains a major topic of discussion among students on campus. Across faculties, many undergraduates and fresh graduates openly express their desire to pursue postgraduate studies or employment opportunities in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and the United States. For many, migration is viewed as a pathway to better career prospects, improved living standards, and greater economic stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several factors continue to fuel this aspiration. These include graduate unemployment, limited career opportunities, inadequate research funding, economic uncertainty, and concerns about security. Although the student loan scheme reduces financial barriers to education, many students believe that access to quality employment after graduation is equally important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education experts argue that the success of the student loan programme should not be measured solely by the number of beneficiaries but also by its contribution to national development. If graduates who benefit from government-funded education immediately relocate abroad, Nigeria may struggle to retain the skilled professionals needed to drive innovation, economic growth, and public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, some analysts note that migration also has positive effects. Nigerians living abroad contribute significantly to the economy through remittances, investments, and knowledge transfer. Many graduates who relocate eventually support their families, establish businesses in Nigeria, or collaborate with local institutions on research and development projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within DELSU, university authorities continue to encourage students to maximise opportunities available in Nigeria while preparing themselves to compete globally. Through entrepreneurship programmes, research initiatives, and industry collaborations, the university aims to equip graduates with practical skills that will enable them to create employment and contribute to national development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students have expressed differing opinions on the issue. Some believe the student loan scheme has restored their confidence in completing their education without financial hardship and has reduced the pressure to suspend their studies. Others maintain that they will still pursue opportunities abroad unless there are significant improvements in employment opportunities, infrastructure, healthcare, security, and the general economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experience at DELSU illustrates both the opportunities and challenges facing higher education in Nigeria today. While NELFUND has expanded access to education and reduced financial stress for many students, addressing the \u201cJapa\u201d phenomenon requires broader reforms that go beyond education financing. Creating a stable economy, expanding graduate employment, supporting research and innovation, and improving living conditions will be essential if Nigeria hopes to retain more of its talented graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As DELSU continues to benefit from the Federal Government\u2019s student loan initiative, the university remains committed to producing highly skilled graduates capable of competing anywhere in the world.
