Residents of Abraka, the university town in Ethiope East Local Government Area, are facing another wave of food-price increases as rising petrol costs continue to drive up transportation and distribution expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A survey across major markets and food outlets in the town showed significant increases in the prices of staples including garri, rice, beans, yam, tomatoes, pepper, vegetables, cooking oil, and fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development is placing fresh strain on households, students, civil servants, and small business owners who say their incomes are no longer matching the rising cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Abraka Main Market, traders linked the increases to higher transport fares charged by drivers conveying food items from farming communities and wholesale markets in neighboring towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe now pay more to bring goods into Abraka than we did a few months ago,\u201d said Mrs. Joy Oghenevwede, a foodstuff dealer.
\u201cTransporters say fuel is more expensive, and that additional cost eventually reflects in market prices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact is particularly felt in Abraka, where the local economy depends heavily on student spending, commerce, and agricultural trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Restaurant operators and food vendors said the cost of ingredients, supply logistics, and running generators has risen sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, many have either increased meal prices or reduced portion sizes to remain in business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students of Delta State University, Abraka, also raised concerns. Several said they now spend far more on feeding than budgeted at the start of the session and have had to cut back on other expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Low-income earners and pensioners on fixed incomes are among the hardest hit, market observers noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic analyst Dr. Michael Edewor said the trend could slow consumer spending and local economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen households spend a larger share of their income on food, they have less money available for education, healthcare, transportation, and other goods and services,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat reduction in discretionary spending can slow business activity within the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retailers reported that while customers still buy essential food items, many are now purchasing smaller quantities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Market stakeholders warned that if transportation costs continue to rise, fewer goods may reach Abraka at affordable prices, affecting both sellers and buyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents and business owners are calling on authorities to improve transportation efficiency, support agricultural production, and ease the burden of rising logistics costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
