{"id":1252,"date":"2026-07-13T22:14:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T21:14:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1252"},"modified":"2026-07-13T22:15:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T21:15:49","slug":"growing-concerns-trail-students-off-campus-worship-centres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1252","title":{"rendered":"Growing Concerns Trail Students\u2019 Off-Campus Worship Centres"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By<\/strong> <strong>Benedicta<\/strong> <strong>Okorotete<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing concern over the safety of students attending off-campus churches has sparked renewed discussions among university authorities, parents, and religious leaders on how to balance freedom of worship with personal security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While religious worship remains a fundamental right and a key part of students\u2019 spiritual and moral development, the rising number of security incidents involving students traveling to churches outside campus has raised fresh alarms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, cases of robbery, kidnapping, road accidents, harassment, and other security-related incidents involving students have been reported in different parts of Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the incidents occurred while students were traveling to or returning from off-campus religious activities, particularly during early morning services, night vigils, choir rehearsals, evangelism outreaches, and fellowship programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parents say they support their children\u2019s commitment to religious activities but are worried about late-night and overnight programmes held outside school premises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mrs. Esther Okoro, a parent, said faith should not override safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe encourage our children to worship God but they must also be careful. No parent wants to receive bad news simply because a child attended a programme far away from school,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religious leaders have emphasized the need for churches to prioritize members\u2019 safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some churches now provide transportation for students after late-night programmes, while others have strengthened campus fellowship centres to reduce unnecessary travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pastor who spoke on condition of anonymity said churches must be proactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFaith doesn\u2019t replace common sense. God expects us to be wise, and churches should help protect students by considering programme schedules and transportation arrangements,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students say campus fellowships should provide safe alternatives without limiting religious freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Precious Okon, a student, said: \u201cIt\u2019s painful seeing students lose their lives over services attended off-campus when those services can be held on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stakeholders agree that students should be free to worship according to their beliefs, but must also make security-conscious decisions to safeguard their lives and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As insecurity persists in many communities, university authorities, parents, and church leaders continue to advocate for better safety planning to ensure that devotion does not come at the cost of students\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Benedicta Okorotete Growing concern over the safety of students attending off-campus churches has sparked renewed discussions among university authorities, parents, and religious leaders on how to balance freedom of worship with personal security.
