In its latest update, the agency reported thousands of suspected cases nationwide and dozens of confirmed deaths.

Children under the age of five have been identified as the most vulnerable group, particularly in communities with limited access to clean water and proper sanitation.

Public health officials attributed the surge in infections to contaminated drinking water, poor waste disposal, overcrowded living conditions, and low levels of hygiene awareness in some affected areas.

They noted that flooding during the rains has further worsened the situation by washing waste into water sources used by residents.

In response, the Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with state governments and development partners, has deployed Rapid Response Teams to the most affected states. Cholera Treatment Centres have been established in high-burden areas, and emergency supplies including oral rehydration salts, antibiotics, and water purification tablets have been distributed to health facilities.

Community sensitization campaigns are also ongoing. Health workers are moving from house to house and through markets, schools, and religious centres to educate residents on preventive measures.

These include boiling drinking water, washing hands regularly with soap, storing water in clean covered containers, and seeking immediate medical attention at the first sign of symptoms such as severe diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration.

Speaking on the situation, a public health official described the outbreak as a serious concern that requires urgent and coordinated action.

The official said that while emergency interventions are necessary to save lives, the root causes of cholera must be addressed through long-term investment in water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure.

Residents in affected communities have been urged to cooperate with health workers and report suspected cases promptly to the nearest health facility.

They were also advised to avoid open defecation, ensure proper disposal of waste, and refrain from drinking water from unsafe sources such as streams and shallow wells.

Medical experts warned that without sustained investment in clean water and sanitation, Nigeria will continue to experience seasonal cholera outbreaks.

They emphasized that prevention through improved infrastructure and public education remains the most effective way to protect communities, especially during the rainy season.

As monitoring continues, health authorities said they remain committed to reducing transmission and preventing further loss of life while working with local leaders to strengthen community-based prevention efforts.

By Ogechukwu Sunday and Pellucid Morrison Health authorities across Nigeria have stepped up efforts to contain an ongoing cholera outbreak that has affected thousands of people, with Borno State recording the highest number of cases and fatalities so far.
