Lecturers at Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka have expressed concern over the increasing reliance of students on Artificial Intelligence tools to complete academic assignments, warning that the trend could undermine critical thinking and genuine learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concern comes amid a broader rise in the use of AI platforms across Nigerian universities, where students now turn to tools such as ChatGPT and other AI applications to generate essays, project reports, and even answers to examination questions with minimal effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several lecturers who spoke with Campus III Press said they have observed a noticeable shift in the quality of submissions from students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to them, many assignments now appear to be generated entirely by AI, with students struggling to explain the content during class presentations or oral defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One lecturer, who asked not to be named, described the situation as worrying, noting that students are becoming less interested in independent research and in engaging with course materials deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAI can be helpful when used properly, but the problem is that many students now copy and submit without reading or understanding what the AI produced,\u201d the lecturer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are seeing students who cannot defend their own work. That defeats the purpose of university education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students interviewed admitted that AI has made academic work faster, especially given the pressure of tight deadlines and multiple courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some said they use AI to brainstorm ideas, summarize textbooks, and improve grammar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, education experts warned that overdependence on these tools could weaken analytical skills, creativity, and the ability to solve problems independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They described the trend as a new form of academic dishonesty that universities must address urgently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts believe that instead of placing outright bans on AI, institutions should focus on teaching students how to use the technology responsibly and ethically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They recommended that AI literacy be incorporated into academic programs so that students understand both the benefits and the limitations of the tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At DELSU, lecturers are calling for a review of assessment methods to ensure that students demonstrate genuine understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suggestions include more oral examinations, practical assessments, in-class tests, and project defenses where students are required to explain their work without the aid of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The university community agrees that Artificial Intelligence is here to stay and can support learning when applied correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, lecturers emphasized that the core values of university education \u2014 research, critical thinking, and originality \u2014 must not be sacrificed for convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
