Students preparing for tests and examinations say the situation has affected their reading schedules, while traders and small business owners complain that their income has dropped due to their inability to operate effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A visit to parts of Abraka revealed that some areas can go for days without public electricity. In student hostels and residential areas, the lack of power has forced many people to rely on alternative sources such as generators, rechargeable lamps, and power banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the high cost of fuel and maintenance has made running generators difficult for most households and business owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mrs. Joy Okon, a food vendor in the main market, said the outages have affected her business because she can no longer refrigerate perishable goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSometimes we go two to three days without light. My fridge is off and I lose goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fuel to run generator is too expensive, so we just manage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Students of Delta State University, DELSU, also expressed frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many said they now struggle to charge their phones, laptops, and other devices needed for academic work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is really affecting us, especially those of us in hostels. Reading at night has become difficult and we depend on torchlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes we have to go to places with light just to charge our devices,\u201d said a 200-level student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Business operators such as barbers, cold room owners, and POS agents said the situation has increased their operating costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some have resorted to solar energy and inverters, but noted that the initial installation cost is beyond the reach of many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Energy experts attribute the problem to several factors including inadequate power generation, poor distribution infrastructure, and the high cost of maintaining the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They noted that university towns like Abraka with large populations often experience higher demand, which puts additional pressure on the limited supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents are calling on the Delta State Government, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, and other relevant authorities to urgently address the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They appealed for improved power infrastructure, regular maintenance, and better communication with consumers during outages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While some residents have begun exploring renewable energy options such as solar panels, many say they are still waiting for a lasting solution from the authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
