{"id":1289,"date":"2026-07-14T00:13:48","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T23:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1289"},"modified":"2026-07-14T00:18:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T23:18:42","slug":"delsu-students-call-for-improved-healthcare-services-at-medical-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1289","title":{"rendered":"DELSU Students Call For Improved Healthcare Services At Medical Centre As Malaria Incidence Surges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Ufuoma Egbara<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students of Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka have called for improvements in healthcare services at the institution\u2019s medical centre to ensure faster treatment and better access to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The students made the appeal during separate interviews, noting that while the health centre provides essential services, challenges with waiting time, drug availability, and equipment need to be addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gladys Olori, a 200-level student, said the clinic plays an important role in student wellbeing but requires more resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe staff are friendly but sometimes patients spend a long time waiting before seeing a professional,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A health worker at the medical centre said the facility continues to treat common illnesses such as malaria, typhoid fever, and minor injuries despite the growing number of patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official urged students to register with the clinic, seek medical attention promptly, and avoid self-medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students expressed hope that continued investment in the health centre would improve access to quality medical services on campus as the university population grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, health workers at Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka have advised students to take preventive measures against malaria following an increase in cases linked to the rainy season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said the combination of stagnant water and increased mosquito breeding during this period puts students at greater risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A nurse at the university medical centre said many students report symptoms such as high fever, headache, body weakness, and loss of appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStudents are advised to sleep under mosquito nets, keep their surroundings clean, and seek medical attention immediately they notice symptoms,\u201d the nurse said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peace Ufuoma, a 100-level student, said she had visited the clinic twice within the week due to malaria<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also alleged that some clinics in Abraka sell fake drugs, which delays recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical experts recommended proper environmental sanitation, elimination of stagnant water, healthy eating, and avoiding self-medication without professional advice to reduce the spread of the disease.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ufuoma Egbara Students of Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka have called for improvements in healthcare services at the institution\u2019s medical centre to ensure faster treatment and better access to care.
