{"id":1360,"date":"2026-07-14T14:04:22","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T13:04:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1360"},"modified":"2026-07-14T14:04:23","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T13:04:23","slug":"poor-road-poor-drainage-disrupt-housing-businesses-in-abraka-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1360","title":{"rendered":"Poor Road, Poor Drainage Disrupt Housing, Businesses In Abraka Community"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Princess Favour Ayegha<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">idents, landlords and business owners on Poultry Road behind Labrix Eatery in Abraka, Delta State, have expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the road, saying persistent flooding and the absence of proper drainage have made movement difficult, reduced property value and negatively affected business activities.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Findings by this reporter during a visit to the area revealed that large sections of the road become submerged after rainfall, leaving residents stranded for days while motorists and commercial motorcycle operators avoid the route.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on the situation, the manager of Laposh Signature Suites, Mr. Emmanuel Ondoma Ogbo, described the condition of the road as a major setback to businesses operating within the community.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is quite unfortunate that we have this challenge in our business environment. Our guests complain about the road whenever they visit, and it has affected patronage. Whenever it rains, the entire place becomes flooded and people cannot even walk through the road,\u201d he said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, the flooding has persisted since the hotel commenced operations over a year ago and usually lasts between four and seven days after heavy rainfall.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the poor condition of the road has increased transportation costs for staff and visitors, as commercial motorcycle operators often charge higher fares to access the area.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Ogbo appealed to the relevant authorities to rehabilitate the road, noting that business owners fulfil their tax obligations and deserve improved infrastructure in return.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A landlord in the area, Mrs. Ojebo, said the condition of the road has discouraged prospective tenants and created additional challenges for property owners.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVehicles and motorcycles cannot enter the street whenever it rains. Tenants complain regularly, and some people who intend to rent houses leave immediately after seeing the flooded road,\u201d she said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She explained that stagnant water remains on the road for several days because there are no drainage channels, adding that the situation has contributed to mosquito breeding and threatens the structural integrity of nearby buildings.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A shop owner, Mr. Lawal, also lamented that flooding has significantly reduced customer patronage.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen it rains, customers avoid this area because the road becomes impassable. Sales drop sharply, and many people prefer to stay away until the water dries,\u201d he said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He attributed the recurring flooding to the absence of drainage facilities and called on the government to address the problem before it worsens.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents also shared similar concerns.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of them, Miss Blessing Udu, said she spends more on transportation because commercial motorcycle operators charge additional fares to enter the community whenever the road is flooded.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe road becomes like a river after heavy rainfall. Sometimes I stay indoors until the water reduces, while other times I have to walk through muddy paths to get home,\u201d she said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She appealed for the construction of proper drainage channels and rehabilitation of the road to improve movement and reduce the hardship faced by residents.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the visit, this reporter observed several large pools of stagnant water covering major portions of the road, making access difficult for residents, motorists and pedestrians.
