Across local markets, the prices of staple food items such as garri, yam, cassava, vegetables, tomatoes, pepper, and maize and even fruits continue to rise, forcing many households to adjust their spending and, in some cases, reduce the quantity and quality of food they consume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although consumers often blame traders for the rising cost of food, a closer look at the agricultural value chain reveals that the problem begins long before food reaches the market. From land preparation and planting to harvesting, transportation, and distribution, farmers are faced with numerous challenges that significantly increase the cost of food production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking during an interview, ONIOVOSA EBOR,a farmer in Abraka, explained that farming has become increasingly expensive due to the rising cost of agricultural inputs. According to the farmer, fertilizers, improved seedlings, herbicides, pesticides, farm tools, and labour are now far more expensive than they were just a few years ago. As production costs continue to rise, farmers are left with little choice but to sell their produce at higher prices in order to recover their investment and remain in business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. EBOR also noted that unpredictable weather patterns have become another major challenge. Irregular rainfall, pexcessive flooding ,and changing climatic conditions have reduced crop yields and increased the risk of crop failure. This has resulted in lower food production, creating shortages that naturally cause an increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Market traders in Abraka confirm that they now purchase farm produce at considerably higher prices than before. They explain that the additional costs&nbsp; leave them with no alternative but to increase market prices. According to several traders, profit margins have remained relatively small despite the increase in selling prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For consumers, however, the consequences are becoming increasingly severe. Many residents say the continuous rise in food prices has placed enormous pressure on family incomes. Households and even students now spend a larger proportion of their earnings on food, leaving less money for education, healthcare, transportation, and other essential needs.
