ABRAKA, Delta State<\/strong> \u2013 The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Delta State University (DELSU) has announced plans to hold a virtual town hall meeting on July 9, 2026<\/strong>, to provide students with an opportunity to discuss academic, welfare, and security challenges affecting life on and off campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Google Meet session, organised in collaboration with the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the Students’ Union, is expected to serve as an interactive platform where students can freely express concerns and seek solutions to issues affecting their academic experience and personal well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the organisers, the meeting will address a wide range of issues, including academic challenges, student harassment, cyberbullying, landlord-tenant disputes, verbal threats, personal safety, and other forms of injustice that students may encounter but find difficult to report publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking ahead of the programme, Emmanuela<\/strong>, a representative of the Department of Physiology and a member of the SUG committee, said the meeting would bring together university administrators, student leaders, security officials, and other stakeholders to listen to students and respond to their concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She disclosed that expected participants include the Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Prof. Samuel Asagba<\/strong>; the SUG President, Amb. Comr. Kingsley Ovedje Dumuje<\/strong>; the Students’ Union Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Barr. Comr. Ojei Emmanuel<\/strong>; CSP Kolo Musa Dauda<\/strong>; Dr. Comr. Onovugheghor Augustine<\/strong>; a former legal practitioner with the Dele Giwa Chamber<\/strong>; and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Director of Health<\/strong>, among other invited guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Emmanuela, the invited personalities will answer students’ questions and provide guidance on issues affecting the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also speaking, Hon. Goodness<\/strong>, a representative of the Department of Nursing, explained that the discussions would go beyond academic matters to include cases of injustice and welfare concerns affecting students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted that issues such as harassment, intimidation, landlord-related disputes, threats to personal safety, and cyberbullying often go unreported because students fear criticism, victimisation, or being misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, unresolved cases of harassment and abuse can have serious consequences, including emotional distress, poor academic performance, school withdrawal, and other mental health challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hon. Goodness further revealed that the Students’ Union has established a WhatsApp platform where students can discuss issues affecting them. She added that an anonymous reporting link has also been created to enable students submit complaints confidentially without fear of retaliation or damage to their reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organisers expressed optimism that the virtual town hall would strengthen communication between students and university authorities, encourage prompt resolution of students’ grievances, and contribute to a safer, more inclusive, and conducive learning environment at Delta State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They added that the initiative reflects the Students’ Union Government’s commitment to ensuring that every student has a voice and that concerns affecting students’ welfare receive the attention they deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
