Once regarded as a quiet university town, Abraka has undergone significant changes over the years. The community, known for hosting Delta State University, is witnessing growth in infrastructure, business activities, housing development, and population. New hostels, shops, restaurants, and transportation services have become common sights, reflecting the town’s gradual transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Growth and Development of ABRAKA<\/strong>
Over the years, the growing student population has contributed to rapid urbanization in Abraka. The demand for accommodation, transportation, food services, and other commercial activities has led to the emergence of hostels, shopping centers, restaurants, and various small businesses. Today, Abraka stands as one of Delta State’s notable university towns, with development driven largely by the economic and social influence of Delta State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Resident Perspective on the Growth and Development.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Apostle Doctor Gideon Ikerhiavbe, who has been in Abraka for over 12 years,As the community has grown over the years with the establishment of the university many churches have sprung up, hotels, lounges , beaches, and others.
Other service providers and communication companies, such as MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile, are now operating efficiently in the area.
Fueling stations are also serving the growing population and are more up-to-date in their service delivery.
The establishment of gas plants has also contributed positively to the development of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges That Has Come With The Development Of The Town.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Security Challenges in Abraka
According to Kennedy Michael, who studied in Abraka about ten years ago, the town was much safer at that time. He explained that the cost of living was relatively low, and basic necessities were affordable for students and residents.
When asked what he dislikes about Abraka today, he stated that there is now intense competition among young people to acquire wealth. According to him, this has contributed to the rise of criminal activities such as internet fraud (\u201cYahoo Yahoo\u201d), ritual practices, and theft
He further explained that Abraka is no longer as safe as it used to be. Many people no longer feel comfortable walking alone at night or going to read on campus during late hours. He noted that female students are often considered vulnerable targets for criminals seeking financial gain through harmful activities.
In conclusion, Kennedy believes that Abraka was a better and safer place in the past than it is today, and he expressed concern about the increasing insecurity in the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


DELSU and Its Impact on Students
According to the respondent, many of the problems facing DELSU began with the university administration. He argued that successive Vice Chancellors have focused more on generating revenue than on addressing students\u2019 welfare and academic needs. He also claimed that many of these administrators have children studying in other universities, including institutions abroad, and therefore may not fully understand the challenges faced by DELSU students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The respondent stated that DELSU has negatively affected life in Abraka by increasing the financial burden on students. He pointed to the introduction of several fees and dues, such as Students\u2019 Union Government (SUG) dues and sanitation or cleaning fees, which he believes are unnecessary and place additional pressure on students.
He further noted that students face challenges such as inadequate lecture halls and insufficient learning facilities. According to him, the university has not done enough to provide the infrastructure needed to support the growing student population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The respondent concluded that the university administration appears to prioritize the collection of fees from students without adequately considering the financial background and economic situation of their parents. As a result, many students struggle to cope with the rising costs associated with higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transformation of Abraka is evident in its expanding infrastructure, growing population, and vibrant economic activities. Yet, beyond the new buildings and businesses are the experiences of residents who have witnessed the town’s evolution firsthand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their stories highlight both the opportunities and challenges that accompany development. As Abraka moves forward, the hope remains that progress will not only reshape the town’s landscape but also improve the lives of those who call it home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
