Students should take preventive measures to protect themselves from malaria,” he said.

Dr. Okorie advised students to sleep under insecticide-treated mosquito nets, clear blocked gutters and drainage channels around their residences, and maintain clean surroundings to reduce mosquito breeding.

He also cautioned against self-medication, urging students experiencing symptoms such as fever, chills, vomiting, or persistent headaches to seek prompt medical attention at the university health centre.

The Chief Medical Director disclosed that malaria testing and treatment are available at subsidised rates for DELSU students with valid identification cards.

He further warned students against failing to complete prescribed antimalarial medication, noting that improper use of drugs could contribute to treatment failure and drug resistance.

Dr. Okorie also called on the university management and host communities to intensify environmental sanitation and fumigation exercises to reduce mosquito infestation as the rainy season progresses.

He stressed that early diagnosis, prompt treatment, and effective environmental hygiene remain critical to reducing the burden of malaria among students and residents of the university community.

By Sunday Bright The Chief Medical Director of the Delta State University (DELSU) Health Centre, Dr. Emmanuel Okorie, has raised concerns over an increase in malaria cases among students, urging members of the university community to adopt preventive measures as the rainy season intensifies.
