However, this assumption is both inaccurate and overly simplistic. It fails to recognize the many personal, cultural, and social reasons behind women’s choices about their appearance.

For many women, looking good is an expression of self-confidence rather than an attempt to gain male approval. A well-groomed appearance can boost self-esteem, foster confidence, and help individuals feel more capable in both their personal and professional lives.

In many societies today, women are among the largest consumers of fashion and beauty products. Their purchasing decisions are often influenced by personal taste, lifestyle, culture, and self-expression rather than a desire to impress men. These choices reflect personal autonomy and individuality.

The fashion and beauty industries have also become more inclusive and diverse, with more women occupying leadership positions, greater representation of different body types, and increased emphasis on individuality. This evolution reflects a broader cultural movement that encourages women to express themselves freely instead of conforming to outdated expectations.

At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that not all women have the same financial opportunities. While some can comfortably afford beauty products and fashion items, others struggle to meet their basic needs.

As the saying goes, “All hands are not equal.” Everyone’s financial situation is different, and personal priorities vary from one individual to another.

Sharing her perspective, Miracle Osas said:

“If all the men in the world disappeared today, I would still buy accessories and beauty products. Do you know the joy of knowing you look beautiful?”

Another respondent, Precious, expressed a similar view:

“Who has time to please men? I’m busy making my own money. What is my business if a man is pleased or not?”

She added:

“Maturity made me realise that doing my nails and lashes makes me feel pretty.”

Interestingly, not all men share the assumption that women dress up solely for their approval. One male respondent remarked:

“I pay for my girlfriend’s nails and lashes because they make her happy, but I don’t really like them. I don’t find them pleasing.”

These differing opinions highlight the fact that beauty and fashion often serve purposes beyond attracting attention from the opposite sex. For many women, investing in their appearance is about confidence, identity, creativity, and personal satisfaction.

The belief that women spend money on cosmetics, clothing, and accessories solely to please men is not only misleading but also reinforces outdated gender stereotypes. It overlooks the complexity of women’s choices and ignores the fact that women, like men, make personal decisions based on their own preferences, values, and aspirations.

As society continues to evolve, it is important to move beyond such stereotypes and recognize that women are individuals with diverse motivations, experiences, and priorities. Self-care and self-expression should be viewed as personal choices rather than actions performed for the approval of others.

Edenamuki Success is a Journalism and Media Studies student at Delta State University, Abraka.

By Edenamuki Success A common belief in society is that women spend money on cosmetics, clothing, and accessories primarily to please men.
