For decades, obtaining a university degree or diploma has been regarded as the most reliable pathway to securing a good job in Nigeria. Many parents have invested heavily in their children’s education, believing that academic qualifications alone would guarantee a successful future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While education remains important, the realities of today’s labour market have shown that certificates without practical skills are no longer enough to secure meaningful employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across Nigeria, thousands of graduates complete their studies every year only to join the growing number of unemployed young people. Despite having impressive academic records, many struggle to find jobs because employers increasingly seek individuals who can demonstrate practical competence, adaptability, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gap between academic knowledge and workplace expectations has become one of the country’s major employment challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rapid growth of technology has also transformed industries and changed the nature of work. Fields such as digital marketing, software development, graphic design, data analysis, cybersecurity, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence are creating new career opportunities that often require specialised skills beyond traditional academic qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Individuals who continuously develop relevant skills are better positioned to adapt and succeed in the modern economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vocational and technical education also deserve greater recognition. Skilled professionals such as electricians, welders, plumbers, fashion designers, mechanics, carpenters, and agricultural experts contribute significantly to national development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, vocational careers have often been viewed as less prestigious compared to white-collar jobs, despite the fact that many skilled workers earn sustainable incomes and create employment opportunities for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skills development also encourages entrepreneurship. Instead of depending solely on government or private-sector employment, young Nigerians with practical abilities can establish businesses, provide valuable services, and contribute to economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From catering and photography to software development, digital content creation, and fashion, many successful entrepreneurs have built sustainable careers by identifying needs and providing solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Educational institutions have a major role to play in preparing students for the future of work. Universities, polytechnics, and colleges should place greater emphasis on practical training, internships, innovation programmes, and entrepreneurship education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students should graduate not only with certificates but also with the confidence and competence required to compete in the workplace or create opportunities for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government policies must also support skills acquisition through increased investment in vocational training centres, digital education, and youth empowerment programmes. Partnerships between government and private organisations can provide young people with the tools, equipment, funding, and mentorship needed to acquire industry-relevant skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such investments will help strengthen Nigeria’s workforce and reduce unemployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents and guardians also have an important role to play by encouraging young people to develop practical skills alongside formal education. Learning digital, technical, or vocational skills should not be seen as a sign of academic failure. Instead, it should be viewed as an advantage in an increasingly competitive job market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A combination of education and practical competence gives young people greater confidence, flexibility, and opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young Nigerians must also embrace lifelong learning. The world of work is constantly changing, and those who stop improving their skills risk becoming less competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Online courses, apprenticeships, professional certifications, volunteer experiences, and mentorship programmes provide accessible ways for individuals to gain new knowledge and remain relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond technical abilities, soft skills such as communication, leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking are also essential for career success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are already inspiring examples of Nigerians who have transformed their lives through skills acquisition. Many young people who once searched endlessly for traditional employment now run successful businesses as software developers, fashion entrepreneurs, photographers, digital marketers, makeup artists, and renewable energy technicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their stories show that practical skills can create opportunities even in a challenging employment environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, certificates remain valuable because they represent academic achievement, commitment, and discipline. However, in today’s competitive economy, they are most effective when combined with practical skills that address the needs of employers and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future belongs to individuals who can combine knowledge with creativity, innovation, and the ability to solve real-world problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Nigeria seeks sustainable economic growth and reduced unemployment, investing in skills development is no longer optional; it is a necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By equipping young people with practical competencies alongside quality education, the country can build a productive workforce capable of driving innovation, creating jobs, and strengthening the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
