A man reaches into his pocket, brings out a ring box, and slowly drops to one knee. The crowd falls silent, cameras are raised, and a single question follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Will you marry me?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many people, this image has become the defining symbol of a marriage proposal. Popularised by films, celebrity engagements, and social media, kneeling has evolved into a widely recognised gesture of love, commitment, and romance. Yet, as modern relationships continue to evolve, opinions remain divided on whether the tradition is still necessary or simply a cherished romantic custom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, kneeling during a marriage proposal is generally viewed as more than a physical act. Many see it as a symbol of respect, humility, sincerity, and lifelong commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Francisca Unutame<\/strong>, a 200-level Journalism and Media Studies student, believes kneeling remains an important aspect of a marriage proposal. According to her, the gesture reflects a man’s willingness to devote himself to the woman he loves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Kneeling to propose to a woman symbolises respect, humility, and shows that you are ready to devote yourself to your partner,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Francisca, kneeling is not merely a tradition but a genuine expression of love and sincerity. She believes the gesture adds romance to the occasion and makes the proposal more memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also acknowledged the influence of social media, celebrity engagements, and romantic films on people’s expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think social media has influenced people’s expectations because many people now desire elaborate and picture-perfect proposals,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A similar opinion was expressed by another 200-level Journalism and Media Studies student, who requested anonymity. She described kneeling as a heartfelt expression of commitment rather than a simple ritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I see it as a memorable and heartfelt expression of love, respect, value, and commitment in a relationship,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, kneeling represents a sincere request for a lifelong partnership rather than a demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While she appreciates the tradition, she believes the true significance of a proposal lies in the emotions behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What makes a proposal meaningful is not how much money is spent but how well it communicates love, commitment, and understanding,” she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some students, however, kneeling is important but not indispensable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abia Divine<\/strong>, a 200-level Journalism and Media Studies student, believes kneeling is a sign of respect for both the woman and her family. He said he would willingly kneel if it would make the occasion more meaningful for his partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Kneeling symbolises respect for the woman and her family,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite valuing the tradition, he does not believe a proposal becomes less meaningful if a man chooses not to kneel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A proposal can still be meaningful without kneeling,” he explained, adding that sincerity and genuine commitment matter more than following a particular custom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A slightly different perspective was offered by Eze Chidera<\/strong>, a 200-level Broadcasting student at Delta State University, Abraka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For him, kneeling is largely a matter of personal choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s a personal choice. What matters most is sincerity, not the posture,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eze argued that the value of a marriage proposal should be measured by the love and intention behind it rather than the specific way it is carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The meaning comes from genuine love and intention,” he added when asked whether a proposal loses its significance if a man does not kneel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also observed that social media has significantly influenced how proposals are conducted today, often encouraging elaborate public displays that create pressure for couples to meet unrealistic expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the students expressed different opinions on the importance of kneeling, they shared one common belief: genuine commitment is the true foundation of every meaningful marriage proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether viewed as an essential tradition or a personal choice, kneeling continues to hold symbolic value for many young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As social media continues to shape modern ideas of romance, the conversation surrounding kneeling during marriage proposals is likely to continue. Yet beyond the ring, the photographs, and the grand gestures, many agree that what truly matters is the sincerity of the commitment behind the question itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
