Some mistakes are small and easily forgotten, while others leave lasting consequences. Making mistakes does not define who we are. What truly defines us is our desire to change and the effort we make to become better.

Life can be unfair. Some people grow up in loving homes, while others experience pain, neglect, rejection, or trauma that shapes the way they see the world. Imagine a young girl who, from childhood, endured emotional wounds that changed her outlook on life. Feeling unloved and misunderstood, she gradually embraced a wayward lifestyle, believing there was no reason to do better.

For years, she blamed her past for her choices. Then came a moment of realization. She understood that while she could not rewrite her past, she could choose a different future. That realization sparked a desire to change. It was not an overnight transformation, nor was it easy. She stumbled, learned, got back up, and kept making conscious efforts to improve. Day by day, her actions began to reflect the person she wanted to become rather than the pain she had experienced.

This is why I believe the desire to change is the next step after recognizing our mistakes. Apologies may acknowledge our wrongs, but they mean little without genuine effort. Change demands courage, discipline, and consistency. It requires us to stop making excuses and start taking responsibility for our actions.

Our society needs to celebrate growth instead of perfection. We should encourage people who sincerely strive to become better rather than permanently judging them by their worst moments. Everyone deserves the opportunity to rewrite their story through positive actions.

At the end of the day, our past may explain our behaviour, but it should never determine our future. The desire to change is the next step toward becoming the best version of ourselves, and our actions, not our excuses, will always define who we are.

About the Authoress

Francis Favour Oghenefejiro is a Journalism student at Delta State University (DELSU).

Email: francisfavour111333@gmail.com

By Francis Favour Oghenefejiro Opinion | Personal Development Nobody is perfect.
