{"id":1516,"date":"2026-07-15T08:45:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T07:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1516"},"modified":"2026-07-15T08:45:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T07:45:14","slug":"students-spending-drives-commerce-around-delsu-site-3-in-abraka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1516","title":{"rendered":"Students\u2019 Spending Drives Commerce Around DELSU Site 3 in Abraka"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By<\/strong> <strong>Godfrey<\/strong> <strong>Aloma<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thousands of Delta State University, DELSU, Site 3 students move through Abraka daily not only for lectures but also as a key driver of the town\u2019s local economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From transport operators and food vendors to landlords and small business owners, many residents say student spending has become the lifeblood of businesses around the Site 3 campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fresh enrollment figures highlight the campus\u2019 importance. According to uniRank, DELSU has an estimated student population of between 20,000 and 24,999. For the 2025\/2026 academic session, the university matriculated about 9,498 new students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An estimated 75 to 80 percent of DELSU students are based at the Abraka Site 3 campus, making it the university\u2019s primary hub for academic activities and student life. The growing numbers have also increased pressure on infrastructure, accommodation, transportation, and security within the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around the Site 3 Small Gate, commercial activity thrives. Restaurants, supermarkets, printing and photocopying centers, stationery shops, barber shops, fashion outlets, and phone accessory stores cater largely to students. Business owners say activity peaks during the academic session and drops sharply during holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce students resume, business picks up immediately,\u201d said a provisions and stationery shop owner near the Site 3 Small Gate. \u201cWhen they are on holiday, sales drop because most of our customers are students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university\u2019s influence is also evident in the housing market. Hostels and rented apartments around Site 3 are often fully occupied, especially at the start of each session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Akpobome Erhikokovie, landlord of Saint Donald Hostel along the Bembo axis near the Site 3 Big Gate, said the university has created strong demand for accommodation.<br>\u201cWithout the students, many of these buildings would be empty. The university has created a strong market for accommodation here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commercial transport operators also depend heavily on students. A tricycle operator known as Bros J, who moves students within the campus and offers delivery services after school hours, said students form the bulk of his passengers.<br>\u201cDuring the school session, I make more trips and earn more money. When the school is on break, business becomes slow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students say they contribute daily to the local economy through spending on transport, food, printing, and learning materials, though many note the rising cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI spend money almost every day on transport, food, printing and photocopying, and school materials,\u201d said Aloma Lilian, a 300-level Marketing and Entrepreneurship student. \u201cStudents are the reason many businesses around here survive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Economic activity around Site 3 peaks during registration, examinations, and project submission periods, when demand for transport, printing, photocopying, and other services rises sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents say the relationship between DELSU and Abraka goes beyond education.
