ABRAKA, Delta State<\/strong> \u2014 The Students’ Union Government (SUG) Director of Sports at Delta State University (DELSU), Comrade Sunday Collins Efe, has identified inadequate sporting facilities and student violence during competitions as major challenges affecting sports development in the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking in an interview with this reporter, Efe said the university lacks the modern facilities required for effective sports development, adding that the existing infrastructure falls below acceptable standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We don’t have well-equipped facilities for different sporting activities. The football pitch is not up to standard, and we don’t even have a swimming pool in DELSU. Basketball is supposed to be an indoor sport, but our basketball court is located outside the sports complex,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Efe also expressed concern over recurring fights among students during football competitions, describing the situation as detrimental to the image of the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Some matches are meant to be friendly, but students still engage in fights between departments and faculties. Fighting is prohibited in DELSU, and students who appear before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee may face serious disciplinary action,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these challenges, Efe said the SUG Sports Directorate is working closely with the university management to improve sporting infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have discussed the issue with the Vice-Chancellor, and we are looking forward to having our own stadium in DELSU. With the support of the Vice-Chancellor, we believe our sporting facilities will improve,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on his vision for sports development, Efe said he hopes to foster unity among student-athletes while increasing DELSU’s participation in major sporting competitions such as the Nigerian University Games (NUGA) and other inter-university events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My vision is to create unity among athletes and ensure DELSU is fully represented in competitions like the NUGA Games. We also want to expand participation beyond football, basketball, and volleyball by introducing sports such as swimming, badminton, and other sporting activities,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On supporting talented student-athletes, the SUG Sports Director disclosed that plans are underway to establish a sports academy that will identify and develop gifted athletes while attracting talent scouts to the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are looking forward to creating a sports academy and bringing scouts to DELSU so talented athletes can be discovered. We also want to improve sporting facilities to help them develop while pursuing their academic programmes,” he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Efe further noted that the university has demonstrated its support for student-athletes by rewarding participants who represented DELSU at the recent NUGA Games with financial incentives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He expressed optimism that the proposed initiatives would strengthen sports development, increase student participation, and improve DELSU’s performance in future sporting competitions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
