All I could say was wow.

She kept encouraging me not to be too sad, that I can live a normal life.”

Chika said sharing his story publicly has helped others understand that HIV is not a death sentence and that treatment allows people to live healthy lives.

Media campaigns regularly highlight the major causes of HIV transmission, which include unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing contaminated needles or sharp objects, mother-to-child transmission, transfusion of infected blood, and occupational exposure.

At the same time, media outlets are working to correct misconceptions.

Experts stress that HIV cannot be transmitted through hugging or shaking hands sharing food or utensils, mosquito bites, coughing or sneezing, and using the same toilet or bathroom

Despite progress, health advocates note that misinformation, inadequate funding, and cultural beliefs still hinder effective communication on HIV/AIDS, especially among young people in rural communities.

Stakeholders say sustained media engagement, coupled with community education and access to testing, will be critical to reducing new infections and stigma.

With social media now a major source of information for youths, experts believe storytelling, digital campaigns, and factual reporting can further strengthen awareness and encourage more young Nigerians to take charge of their health.

By Precious Oyovwe The media continue to play a vital role in informing, educating, and sensitising Nigerians on HIV/AIDS, with increased focus on reaching youths through radio, television, newspapers, and social media platforms.
