The event served as an opportunity for participants to strengthen their faith while considering their responsibilities within the university community and society at large.

Delivering the homily, Rev. Fr. (Dr.) James Urien explained that the Feast of the Epiphany commemorates the manifestation of Jesus Christ to the world. He noted that the biblical visit of the wise men symbolises God’s love for all people regardless of nationality, status or background.

According to the priest, believers should not only focus on receiving blessings but should also become channels through which positive change can be achieved. He stated that every individual possesses unique abilities that can be used to improve the lives of others.

Addressing students specifically, he urged them to view education as a means of service rather than merely a pathway to personal success. He explained that knowledge becomes more valuable when applied to solving problems and supporting community development. Rev. Fr. Urien further stressed the importance of integrity, humility, discipline and compassion.

He observed that these values remain necessary for personal growth and responsible citizenship.

He encouraged young people to remain focused on their goals and avoid activities capable of affecting their future negatively. Throughout the service, members of the congregation participated actively in prayers, scripture readings and hymns.

The atmosphere reflected a spirit of devotion and collective worship. Special prayers were offered for peace, national progress, educational advancement and the well-being of students. Worshippers also prayed for wisdom and guidance in their academic and personal pursuits.

Many students who attended the Mass described the message as inspiring and practical. Some explained that the sermon challenged them to think about how they could contribute positively to society through their studies and future careers.

Others noted that religious programmes organised on campus help students maintain strong moral values despite the pressures associated with university life. According to them, such activities provide encouragement, counselling and opportunities for spiritual growth.

Observers pointed out that faith-based organisations continue to play an important role in character development. Through teachings, outreach programmes and mentorship initiatives, religious institutions help promote ethical conduct and social responsibility among young people.

The Feast of the Epiphany remains significant within the Christian faith because it emphasises inclusion, unity and service to humanity. Religious leaders often use the occasion to remind believers of their obligation to support one another and contribute to the common good. At DELSU, the Catholic Chaplaincy continues to organise programmes that encourage spiritual growth and community engagement.

These activities provide students with opportunities to strengthen their faith while developing qualities that can positively influence their future endeavours. As the celebration concluded, participants expressed appreciation for the lessons shared during the service. Many left with renewed determination to apply the values discussed and to become positive influences within their communities.

The event highlighted the enduring role of religion in promoting moral development, responsible leadership and peaceful coexistence. Through messages centred on service and compassion, religious institutions continue to contribute to personal and societal progress.

By Victory Omuasi Members of the Catholic community at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, were encouraged to use their talents, education and opportunities to make meaningful contributions to society during a Mass held at St. Paul’s Catholic Chaplaincy to mark the Feast of the Epiphany.
