Supported by ongoing economic reforms and digital integration, the sector is experiencing increased business activity, creating jobs and expanding the country’s economic base.

The growth has been strengthened through government initiatives and private-sector investments aimed at improving the business environment and supporting entrepreneurship.

Business owners across major cities, including Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, reported improvements in sales and customer demand compared with previous years. Many entrepreneurs have also embraced digital technologies, enabling them to reach wider markets through online platforms and mobile payment systems.

According to recent economic reports, Nigeria’s recovery is contributing to improved macroeconomic stability. Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) contribute more than 48 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and account for approximately 84 per cent of employment, making them one of the largest contributors to national economic development.

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has introduced programmes and policies aimed at supporting business registration, improving access to finance, and promoting entrepreneurship across the country.

Economic institutions, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), have projected continued economic growth for Nigeria, citing ongoing reforms and increased private-sector participation as positive indicators.

Despite these encouraging signs, several challenges continue to affect businesses and the broader economy. Rising inflation, unemployment, exchange rate fluctuations, and the increasing cost of living remain major concerns for business owners and consumers alike.

Economic experts have advised the government to sustain stable economic policies, improve infrastructure, strengthen public services, and provide greater support for businesses to ensure that the current recovery is maintained.

While Nigeria’s economy continues to show signs of improvement, experts believe that addressing inflation and other structural challenges will be essential to achieving sustainable long-term growth, creating more employment opportunities, and improving the standard of living for Nigerians.

References

Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE). Nigeria’s Economy on Gradual Recovery Path (2026).

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Economic Outlook (2026).

World Bank. Global Economic Prospects Report (2026).

International Monetary Fund (IMF). World Economic Outlook Update (2026).

Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). Roadmap for MSME Growth (2026).

PwC Nigeria. Nigeria Economic Outlook (2026).

By Alicia Ogheneovo Nigeria’s economy is showing signs of recovery, with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) playing a leading role in driving economic growth and development.
