The recently concluded three-week trade fair at Delta State University (DELSU), Site III Campus, has been described by vendors and students as a successful business event that boosted sales, promoted entrepreneurship, and strengthened interaction between small business owners and the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trade fair, held from June 1 to June 19, 2026<\/strong>, took place at the open space opposite the Pre-Degree (PD) Building, near the Small Gate of the university. Although initially scheduled to last for two weeks, the event was extended by an additional week following the high level of participation from students and vendors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 40 vendors participated in the fair, showcasing a wide range of products and services, including food, clothing, perfumes, books, skincare products, bags, hair products, beverages, and recreational games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many vendors told this reporter<\/em> that the extension proved beneficial, allowing them to attract more customers and increase their sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A perfume vendor, who has participated in several trade fairs over the years, described the additional week as “God-sent.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Students came out massively. I met my expected sales and even exceeded them. They were friendly, the prices were fair, and many returned to patronise me again. This year’s trade fair was better than last year’s,” she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Despite the positive experience, she appealed to the organisers to reduce the participation fee for vendors, describing it as expensive. She also identified persistent rainfall as the major challenge during the event but expressed her willingness to participate in future editions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A food vendor, participating in the trade fair for the second time, also praised the event for giving her business greater visibility and attracting new customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This trade fair gave my business exposure and visibility. I know my business will never remain the same after this experience,” she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She explained that although she achieved and even surpassed her sales target, heavy rainfall and strong winds disrupted business on one occasion after her canopy was blown over, scattering her goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, organisers should provide a more secure venue and reduce participation fees to encourage more entrepreneurs to take part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She advised aspiring food entrepreneurs to remain consistent and committed, stressing that perseverance is essential for business success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amitaye Vowero, a 100-level Pharmacology student, described the food vendors as impressive, saying the quality and affordability of their meals encouraged repeat patronage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The food vendors were amazing. Everything was nice, and I’ll definitely come back whenever there’s another trade fair,” she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Not all vendors, however, recorded outstanding sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bookseller with more than two decades of experience said changing reading habits had negatively affected his business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People no longer buy books the way they used to. Reading culture has declined. I sold mostly fiction books, but I didn’t meet my expected sales,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Although he acknowledged that trade fairs provide businesses with valuable publicity, he noted that he prefers selling independently because customers are less distracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also recommended better publicity, lower participation costs, and scheduling future trade fairs during periods when students are more financially buoyant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students who visited the fair also expressed satisfaction with the event, describing it as an opportunity to shop for quality products at affordable prices while supporting student entrepreneurs and local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite challenges posed by persistent rainfall, participants agreed that the DELSU Site III Trade Fair successfully promoted entrepreneurship, created networking opportunities, and strengthened business relationships within the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
