A growing shortage of accommodation in Abraka, Delta State, has become a major concern for students and residents, with many struggling to secure affordable and decent housing within the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Findings by our correspondent<\/em> revealed that demand for accommodation has continued to increase, particularly with the rising number of students admitted into Delta State University (DELSU). As a result, available hostels and apartments are quickly occupied at the beginning of each academic session, leaving many prospective tenants with limited options and forcing some to settle for substandard housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several students who spoke with our correspondent<\/em> complained that the few available accommodations are not only expensive but also lack basic amenities such as reliable electricity, clean water supply, proper drainage systems, and adequate security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A final-year Delta State University student, Micheal Tejiri, said she spent several weeks searching for accommodation before eventually securing a room at a price far above her budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I had to move from one street to another before I found a room. The rent was much higher than I expected, but I had no choice because lectures had already started,” she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Another resident, Oghenetega Joy, expressed concern over the worsening housing situation, stating that the shortage has resulted in overcrowding in many parts of the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, it is now common to find several students sharing a small apartment in order to reduce living costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted that overcrowding has also placed additional pressure on water supply, sanitation facilities, and electricity, making living conditions more difficult for both students and permanent residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Property agents in the community attributed the challenge to the increasing population and the slow pace of housing development. They explained that while the number of students continues to grow each year, the construction of new hostels and residential buildings has not kept pace with rising demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One property agent said many landlords now receive multiple applications for a single apartment, making it difficult for prospective tenants to secure accommodation before the commencement of each academic session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community leaders have called on private investors, estate developers, and relevant government agencies to support the construction of affordable housing projects in Abraka. They argued that increasing the supply of quality accommodation would reduce pressure on existing buildings and improve the welfare of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also urged landlords to consider the economic realities faced by students and other low-income earners when fixing rental prices. According to them, excessive rent increases have made it increasingly difficult for many families and students to afford decent housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students appealed to the management of Delta State University and relevant authorities to encourage the development of additional student hostels through partnerships with private investors. They believe such initiatives would help address the accommodation deficit and create a more conducive learning environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As demand for accommodation continues to rise, many residents believe urgent intervention is necessary to prevent the housing situation from worsening.
