He explained that AI tools such as ChatGPT can be valuable learning resources, but their effectiveness depends on how students choose to use them.

According to him, many students rely on AI to complete assignments without actively engaging in the learning process. He warned that excessive dependence on AI could reduce students’ critical thinking skills, discourage independent study, and make some learners less committed to their academic development.

Benedict said Artificial Intelligence presents significant opportunities for Nigerian universities by improving teaching, learning, research, and administrative processes. He added that AI can reduce lecturers’ workload, allowing them to devote more time to supporting students who require additional academic assistance.

However, he identified several challenges associated with the adoption of AI in education, including high implementation costs, the digital divide, data privacy concerns, cybersecurity risks, overreliance on technology, academic dishonesty, and the spread of inaccurate information.

He stressed the need for Nigerian universities to develop clear policies and ethical guidelines governing the use of Artificial Intelligence. According to him, AI can enhance learning by helping students generate ideas, improve their writing, understand difficult concepts more easily, and access personalised academic support. However, without proper regulations, students may misuse AI by presenting AI-generated work as their own.

Speaking on the future of education, Benedict said students must develop both technical competence and essential human skills to remain relevant in an AI-driven world. While acknowledging AI’s capabilities, he emphasised that its effectiveness ultimately depends on people who can think critically, exercise good judgement, and apply the technology responsibly.

He also noted that Artificial Intelligence is already transforming journalism by making news gathering, content production, and news distribution faster and more efficient. According to him, AI can generate routine news reports and deliver personalised content to audiences, while journalists continue to play indispensable roles in ensuring accuracy, ethical reporting, investigative journalism, and in-depth storytelling.

In his concluding remarks, Benedict advised students not to fear Artificial Intelligence but to embrace it as a tool for learning rather than a replacement for human intelligence.

He encouraged students to strengthen their critical thinking, creativity, discipline, and problem-solving skills, noting that these qualities cannot be fully replaced by AI. According to him, relying entirely on AI without acquiring genuine knowledge will leave students less prepared for examinations, future careers, and real-life challenges.

“Don’t compete with AI.
