ABRAKA<\/strong> \u2014 The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Professor Samuel Asagba, has unveiled an ambitious five-year development blueprint for the institution, promising sweeping reforms in infrastructure, academic excellence, research, and student welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a press briefing held at the university’s administrative complex in Abraka, the Vice-Chancellor outlined plans to construct new academic buildings, upgrade laboratory facilities, and expand the university’s digital learning infrastructure, all aimed at improving the institution’s national and global ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our vision is clear: to transform Delta State University into a world-class institution that produces graduates capable of competing on the global stage,” Professor Asagba said while addressing faculty members, students, and other university stakeholders.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The development plan, which the Vice-Chancellor described as the most comprehensive in the university’s recent history, is expected to cost several billion naira. According to him, it will be financed through a combination of government subventions, internally generated revenue, and partnerships with donor organisations and the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Asagba disclosed that the university has already secured commitments from several private-sector partners willing to invest in specific faculties and research centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A major highlight of the blueprint is the proposed construction of a state-of-the-art Mass Communication studio complex, a development that was warmly received by students present at the briefing. The Vice-Chancellor also announced plans to establish a modern student healthcare facility, improve the university’s internal road network, and install solar-powered streetlights across the campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the academic front, he revealed that the university intends to introduce new postgraduate programmes in emerging fields such as cybersecurity, data science, and environmental management to prepare graduates for the rapidly evolving global job market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vice-Chancellor also addressed concerns over the condition of student hostels and water supply on campus, acknowledging that they have remained long-standing challenges. He assured students that rehabilitation and upgrading of hostel facilities would commence within the first phase of the implementation timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faculty members who spoke with this reporter<\/em> after the briefing expressed cautious optimism about the proposed reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A senior lecturer in the Department of Economics described the blueprint as promising but emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in the management of funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have heard great plans. What we need to see now is implementation,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Some students, particularly those in their final year, expressed concern that they may not directly benefit from the full implementation of the five-year plan before graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a 200-level Mass Communication student, who identified herself simply as Chisom, said she remained optimistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Even if we don’t enjoy all of it, the next generation of DELSU students will,” she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The unveiling of the blueprint comes as the university prepares for its next accreditation cycle, with several departments currently undergoing self-assessment exercises. Observers believe that if successfully implemented, the Vice-Chancellor’s development agenda could significantly strengthen the institution’s standing with the National Universities Commission (NUC) and enhance its reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
