Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT and Meta AI are becoming valuable study aids for many students, but they should complement\u2014not replace\u2014traditional learning methods, a Delta State University (DELSU) student has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with this reporter<\/em>, Abuaking Peter, a 200-level Biochemistry student in the Department of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), said AI has helped him understand difficult concepts, especially when lectures are delivered too quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Biochemistry has a lot of complex pathways and reactions. Sometimes lecturers move through the topics very quickly. I go home, open ChatGPT, and ask it to explain glycolysis or the Krebs cycle like I’m five years old. It breaks everything down with simple examples, and that really helps me understand,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Peter, however, cautioned against using AI to complete assignments without understanding the subject matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Some students simply copy AI-generated answers and submit them. But some lecturers are wise now. After submission, they ask you to explain your work. If you only copied from AI, you’ll struggle during the oral assessment. I use AI to understand the topic first, then I write my answers in my own words,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He also identified the high cost of internet data and unreliable electricity supply as major obstacles to using AI effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“AI needs internet access. When there’s no electricity on campus and the Wi-Fi isn’t working, I have to buy data with my own money. I can’t always afford that, so sometimes I go to the library or the Faculty of Science Extension to use the free Wi-Fi,” he explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Despite growing concerns about Artificial Intelligence replacing human roles, Peter dismissed the idea that AI could replace practical science training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Never. AI can explain concepts, but it can’t perform practical experiments for you. In the Biochemistry laboratory, you must carry out the experiments yourself\u2014whether it’s staining, titration, or analysing results. AI won’t hold the pipette for you. It’s only a guide,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He advised fellow students to embrace Artificial Intelligence as a learning aid while maintaining independent thinking and practical skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Use AI, but don’t let AI use you. Let it be your tutor, not your answer sheet,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
