The estimated bills we received were far too high. In some months, the electricity bill was almost twice the amount we paid for house rent. Imagine paying ₦50,000 for electricity that we hardly even used. To make matters worse, we often did not have electricity, which also meant we had no water because our water supply depends on power. It was a very difficult experience,” she said.

Another resident, Miss Ifeoma, who lives in Benbo, described the development as long overdue.

“With prepaid meters, people can now manage their electricity expenses better and avoid unnecessary billing disputes,” she said.

Mr Paul, a resident of Ekrejeta, advised residents who are yet to obtain prepaid meters to make efforts to do so, noting that the system gives users better control over their electricity expenses.

“I would advise them to make every effort to get a prepaid meter because it really helps. The electricity supply we receive is very poor—you hardly see light, yet the estimated bills remain very high. Instead of continuing to pay huge bills for electricity you do not use, it is better to invest in getting a prepaid meter. It gives you better control over your electricity expenses,” he said.

A business owner in Benbo, Mr Endurance, also expressed satisfaction with the installation process and the introduction of prepaid meters.

“I am satisfied with the installation process and with the prepaid meter. It has made electricity billing much fairer and easier to manage,” he said.

He added that improved electricity management would support commercial activities in the area, stressing that reliable power supply is important for the growth of small and medium-scale businesses.

Community leaders also noted that the programme would promote transparency in electricity billing and encourage prompt payment for power consumption, which could contribute to improved service delivery.

They added that wider access to prepaid meters could attract more investors to Abraka, create a more favourable environment for businesses, and support the overall development of the community.

As the distribution exercise continues, many residents have called for the programme to be extended to all parts of Abraka to ensure that every household benefits from the initiative.

By Kugbere Emuesiri LourentaResidents of Abraka have welcomed the ongoing distribution of prepaid electricity meters across the town, describing the initiative as a major step towards improved electricity management, economic growth, and community development.
