{"id":1685,"date":"2026-07-15T15:38:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T14:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1685"},"modified":"2026-07-15T15:38:47","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T14:38:47","slug":"residents-decry-flooded-streets-as-drainage-problems-persist-in-abraka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1685","title":{"rendered":"Residents Decry Flooded Streets as Drainage Problems Persist in Abraka"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Oghenefejro Joseph<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents of Abraka, including students of Delta State University (DELSU), have expressed concern over the persistent flooding of streets during heavy rainfall, attributing the situation to poor drainage systems across the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Areas mostly affected include streets immediately after the expressway and the old road axis of the town, where many roads lack functional drainage channels. Residents identified some of the regularly flooded areas as Beside BZ Hotel, Beside Labrix Eatery, Buwa Street, Amazing Grace Street, and Elizabetha Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students and business owners said they are often forced to walk through knee-deep water to access lecture halls, business centres, and other destinations whenever it rains. Commercial motorcycle operators also complained that the flooding has negatively affected their operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRegarding bad roads during the rainy season, the roads get flooded. Some people even dump trash by the roadside, and that causes heavy pollution for pedestrians going about their daily activities,\u201d said Favour, a 100-level Mass Communication student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another resident of Elizabetha Street, Emmanuel, said the absence of proper drainage makes movement difficult during the rainy season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring the rainy season, streets get flooded due to the unavailability of a drainage system. It becomes very difficult to reach your destination without getting wet or stained with dirty water,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cassy, a 100-level Journalism and Media Studies student who resides at House 24, said her street has been badly affected because there is no drainage system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhenever it rains, the water has nowhere to go. It just stays on the road for days,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ade, a 400-level Nursing student, explained that although some areas have drainage channels, many of them are no longer effective because they are blocked by sand and refuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have drainage systems in my area, but they are blocked with sand and refuse. So when it rains, the water just stays on the road,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A commercial motorcyclist, Mr Monday, also lamented that flooding has affected his daily income and increased the cost of maintaining his motorcycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the streets flood, passengers no dey come out. The water even spoils my bike. Parts like the chain, sprocket, bearing, brake pads, and exhaust pipes get damaged because the water enters them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The continuous flooding has disrupted transportation and daily activities in Abraka. Some students said they often arrive late for lectures or miss classes entirely due to flooded roads, while business owners reported reduced customer turnout whenever it rains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commercial motorcyclists added that the situation has reduced their earnings and increased repair expenses caused by prolonged exposure to floodwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents have appealed to the Ethiope East Local Government Council and the Delta State Ministry of Environment to urgently address the problem by desilting existing drainage channels, constructing new ones, and enforcing regulations against indiscriminate dumping of refuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are tired of wading through water every time it rains.
