Rising petrol prices have continued to increase transportation costs for students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, with many students now paying higher fares for daily movement around the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 300-level Sociology student, Blessing Oke, said she now pays \u20a6500 for a motorcycle ride from the Main Gate to Site 3, compared to the \u20a6300 she paid during the previous semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLast semester it was \u20a6300. My allowance is still \u20a620,000, so I now trek twice a week to reduce transport expenses,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The increase in transport fares follows a rise in petrol prices, which has affected commercial motorcycle operators and other small businesses in Abraka. A survey of four filling stations in the town showed petrol prices ranging from \u20a61,320 to \u20a61,330 per litre, with an average price of \u20a61,325.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rise in fuel prices has placed additional pressure on students, many of whom depend on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada<\/em>, to move between campuses and their residences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A commercial motorcyclist, Emeka, who operates around Campus 2, said the increase in fuel costs has reduced his daily income despite charging higher fares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI buy fuel at \u20a61,325. Before, I could make eight trips from Main Gate to Site 3 with \u20a62,400. Now I make about five trips with \u20a62,500. Passengers complain whenever I increase fares to \u20a6600,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students said the situation has affected their academic routine, especially those who live far from campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLectures sometimes end by 6 p.m. There is no longer a \u20a6200 transport fare. I paid \u20a6500 yesterday. I have three days of classes left, and that is \u20a61,500 already spent,\u201d Blessing said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business owners in the community have also reported the impact of increased fuel costs on their operations. A provision store owner, identified as Mama K, said reduced student spending and higher operating expenses have affected sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy shop sales drop when school is on break. But now, even during the session, students trek because of transport costs. Fuel has affected business,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that the cost of producing ice blocks increased from \u20a6300 to \u20a6500 due to the rising cost of using generators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economic analysts describe the situation as cost-push inflation, where rising production and transportation costs lead to higher prices for goods and services. The increase in fuel prices has continued to influence the cost of movement, goods, and daily expenses for many Nigerians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For DELSU students, the impact is felt directly in their daily transportation choices. Many are now reducing unnecessary trips, walking longer distances, or adjusting their budgets to cope with the rising cost of movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents and students hope that improved fuel supply, stable exchange rates, and better economic policies will help reduce pressure on transportation costs in the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
