{"id":1703,"date":"2026-07-15T16:02:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T15:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1703"},"modified":"2026-07-15T16:02:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T15:02:48","slug":"delsu-wins-36-medals-at-nuga-games-as-university-plans-sports-facility-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mediaconversation.com\/?p=1703","title":{"rendered":"DELSU Wins 36 Medals at NUGA Games as University Plans Sports Facility Upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Otomonmen Oghenetanure Ruth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has recorded an impressive performance at the ongoing Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) Games in Calabar, Cross River State, winning a total of 36 medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university secured 16 gold medals, 13 silver medals and seven bronze medals, with a significant number of the medals coming from swimming events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The achievement comes despite the absence of a standard swimming pool at the university\u2019s sports centre, a situation that has raised concerns about the available facilities for athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on the development, the Head of Department of Human Kinetics said the current sports facilities at DELSU do not fully represent the potential of the university\u2019s athletes. He, however, praised the students for their commitment and determination to excel despite the limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He disclosed that the university was making plans to improve sports infrastructure, including the construction of a swimming pool and a stadium to support athletes and encourage greater participation in sporting activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Vice-Chancellor of the university also reaffirmed DELSU\u2019s commitment to sports development, promising continued support for athletes and improved facilities. He noted that the university\u2019s success in swimming events demonstrated the need for better sporting infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Director of Sports, Mr. Omaguwa Peter, attributed the achievement to the support and commitment of the Vice-Chancellor towards sports development. He disclosed that three students were sponsored to represent the university at the games in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The students included Ogho from the Department of Economics, Chioma from the Department of Human Kinetics, and Stanley Bamboke, who competed in the long jump event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DELSU\u2019s performance at the NUGA Games has further strengthened its reputation in university sports and highlighted the potential of its athletes.
