Litter was also scattered around the area, creating an unpleasant environment and exposing residents to possible health risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation has renewed concerns about sanitation management in Abraka, a university community that accommodates thousands of students of Delta State University (DELSU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, the town has witnessed increased residential development due to the growing student population. However, some hostels, rented apartments and residential streets continue to experience sanitation challenges, with refuse often left unattended for several days before evacuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents identified poor waste disposal habits, irregular refuse collection, inadequate waste disposal facilities and limited attention to sanitation by some landlords and caretakers as factors contributing to the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They noted that while government agencies have a responsibility to improve waste management, residents also need to adopt better sanitation practices by disposing of waste properly and keeping their surroundings clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environmental experts have warned that accumulated refuse can encourage the spread of diseases by creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes, flies and rodents. They also noted that poor sanitation affects the attractiveness of residential areas and reduces the quality of living conditions for students and other residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some residents expressed concern that the situation could worsen as Abraka\u2019s population continues to increase. They stressed that a clean environment is necessary to maintain public health and preserve the town\u2019s reputation as a major university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents have therefore called on landlords, tenants, caretakers and waste management authorities to work together by ensuring regular refuse evacuation, providing adequate disposal facilities and creating awareness on proper sanitation practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Abraka continues to expand, stakeholders believe that maintaining a clean and healthy environment should be treated as a collective responsibility.
