Commercial transport operators have increased fares, the cost of moving goods has risen, and prices of essential food items have continued to climb in Abraka and surrounding communities.

For many students, feeding has become a major challenge. A food item such as tomato, which previously sold for about ₦500 per portion, now costs as much as ₦1,000, with buyers often receiving only a few pieces. As a result, meals that were once affordable, including stew, have become increasingly difficult for students to maintain.

“Things are really hard now. Transport from campus to town has doubled. When you add food expenses, most of us just manage one meal a day. It is affecting our reading and health,” said Tomons Grace, a 300-level student of DELSU.

Market women in Abraka also attributed the rising prices of food items to increased transportation costs. They explained that farmers, wholesalers, and traders now spend more on fuel and diesel to move goods, forcing them to transfer the additional expenses to consumers.

The situation has placed many students, especially those dependent on limited allowances, under financial strain. Some now face difficult choices between paying transportation fares, purchasing academic materials, and maintaining regular meals.

Student leaders have appealed to the government and university authorities to consider interventions such as transportation support, food assistance programmes, and other palliative measures to reduce the burden on students.

As fuel prices continue to affect the cost of living, many students in Abraka say their greatest challenge is no longer only academic success but also the struggle to afford basic necessities while pursuing their education.

By Oghenevvede Godsent The continuous increase in fuel prices across Nigeria is putting additional pressure on students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, as rising transportation costs and food prices make daily living increasingly difficult.
