Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Abraka and other parts of Delta State are facing increasing economic pressure as rising inflation, high operating costs, and unstable supply chains continue to affect business activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many traders in the university town, the challenge of maintaining prices while coping with reduced consumer purchasing power has become a daily struggle, especially with many customers being students of Delta State University (DELSU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State Intervention and Budget Allocation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In response to the economic difficulties faced by small businesses, the Delta State Government has proposed an allocation of \u20a63 billion for the State Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (DESMEDA) in its 2026 fiscal plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fund is expected to support entrepreneurs through capital assistance, business training, mentorship programmes, and expansion grants aimed at strengthening MSMEs across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe aim to strengthen support for MSMEs to ensure businesses obtain the funding needed to start and expand operations,\u201d Dr. Godwin Adolor, Executive Secretary of DESMEDA, told the inter-ministerial budget committee in Asaba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that many businesses fail due to poor financial management and inadequate skills, stressing that the initiative would provide training, mentorship, and soft loans to improve entrepreneurial capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria\u2019s headline inflation stood at 33.9 per cent as of May 2026, while food inflation remained higher at 40.5 per cent. The figures have continued to affect small-scale businesses and consumers across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, despite government intervention plans, many traders in Abraka say the economic situation remains difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust, a 33-year-old foodstuff trader at Abraka Market, said the rising cost of goods has significantly reduced her ability to stock her shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u20a6100,000 cannot stock my shop for one week again. How will I feed my children? Customers now buy little instead of full because money is scarce,\u201d she said while arranging yams at her stall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Service providers have also been affected by increased operating expenses. Tunde, a barber near DELSU Big Gate 3, said he was forced to increase haircut charges from \u20a6500 to \u20a6800 due to rising fuel and electricity costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStudents complain every day, but diesel is \u20a61,200 per litre. If I don\u2019t increase my price, I will close shop,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inflationary pressure has also affected students, many of whom rely on limited allowances. Amarachi, a 200-level Mass Communication student, said her weekly feeding budget increased from \u20a65,000 to \u20a614,500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFood vendors reduced portion sizes, but the price remained the same. We now cook in groups of five to survive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students explained that increased food and transportation costs have forced them to reduce spending on academic materials, including textbooks and internet data subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DESMEDA officials said the \u20a63 billion intervention fund is expected to begin disbursement in July 2026, with priority given to women entrepreneurs, youth-owned businesses, and agro-processing enterprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economists in Ethiope East Local Government Area believe that if the funds reach small businesses at the grassroots level, the initiative could create employment opportunities and reduce poverty among residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, traders like Trust continue to adjust to the harsh economic realities while waiting for government promises to translate into tangible support. As inflation continues to affect businesses, many believe the survival of Abraka\u2019s MSMEs depends on how quickly economic relief reaches entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
