Once known as a quiet community driven mainly by farming, fishing, and small-scale trading, Abraka has undergone significant transformation over the years, emerging as one of Delta State\u2019s notable university towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Abraka is predominantly inhabited by the Urhobo people and is recognised for its natural environment, including the popular Ethiope River, which has attracted visitors from neighbouring communities. Before the establishment and expansion of Delta State University (DELSU), economic activities in the town were largely centred on agriculture and local commerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the presence of the university has changed the social and economic landscape of the community. The increasing student population has contributed to rapid urbanisation, leading to the growth of residential areas, businesses, transportation services, and commercial activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the demand for student accommodation, food services, transportation, and other necessities has encouraged the establishment of hostels, restaurants, shopping centres, hotels, and various small businesses across the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents Recall Abraka\u2019s Transformation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A resident who has lived in Abraka for over 12 years described the remarkable changes he has witnessed since settling in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, when he first arrived, areas such as Winners Road were largely undeveloped and covered with bushes. He recalled that the area was once known as \u201cChrist Chosen Street\u201d and was surrounded by thick vegetation where residents often encountered wildlife such as squirrels and snakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained that the environment was so bushy and unsafe at the time that he often advised his children to move quickly when sent to fetch water due to fears of possible attacks from animals or criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resident, who said he was among the first people to build a house along Winners Road, noted that Abraka has experienced major changes in population growth, housing development, and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He attributed much of the transformation to the influence of Delta State University, which he said has played a significant role in attracting people, businesses, and investment into the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growth and Infrastructure Development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The resident identified several developments that have taken place in Abraka over the years, including the construction of tarred roads, drainage systems, boreholes, hotels, leisure centres, beaches, lounges, and private schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also noted the increase in private educational institutions within the town. According to him, when he first arrived, the number of private schools was limited, with institutions such as Anty Rose School off Omono Street being among the few available, while most schools were government-owned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another resident, Kennedy Michael, who has lived in Abraka for about 10 years, recalled that the town was previously more affordable and peaceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the cost of living was lower at the time, with residents enjoying cheaper goods and services compared to the current situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges Accompanying Development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the positive changes brought by urban growth, residents say the expansion of Abraka has also introduced several challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kennedy expressed concern over the rising cost of living, stating that some traders take advantage of the large student population by increasing prices of goods and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transportation was also identified as a major challenge. He complained that transport fares within the town have become increasingly expensive, with even short-distance trips attracting high charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven when you tell them you are a student, they will say students have money. Some students do not even have monthly upkeep; they are just managing the little they have,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Housing costs have also become a major concern for residents and students. According to Kennedy, increasing rent prices by landlords and property owners have made accommodation difficult to afford, especially for students seeking basic housing options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While rapid development has brought economic opportunities and improved infrastructure to Abraka, residents believe there is a need for better planning to ensure that growth is matched with improved living conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the town continues to expand, many residents hope that future development will focus not only on economic growth but also on affordable housing, transportation improvement, and better social amenities for everyone living in the university community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
