They urged authorities to take decisive steps to restore confidence and ensure that Abraka remains safe for residents and visitors.

Government representatives assured residents that measures were being taken to address security challenges across the state. While residents welcomed the assurance, they expressed hope that the interventions would lead to lasting improvements.

Some community members also called on political leaders and candidates seeking public office to prioritise security issues affecting the town rather than focusing mainly on political activities.

Residents noted that kidnapping has remained a major concern in Abraka despite previous efforts by successive administrations and security agencies to tackle criminal activities.

Protest Turns Chaotic

The peaceful protest reportedly became tense after a confrontation between protesters and security personnel.

Eyewitnesses said security operatives attempted to disperse protesters after allegations that some demonstrators became violent and threw stones. Some witnesses also claimed that gunshots were fired during the incident, causing panic among residents.

A 22-year-old Political Science Education student of Delta State University (DELSU) said some angry residents confronted security officials and demanded that they leave the protest venue.

Another resident, Mr. John, said some protesters felt security personnel should focus more on confronting criminal elements rather than disrupting a peaceful demonstration.

Student leaders and business owners also expressed concern that insecurity has affected commercial activities and weakened Abraka’s image as a university community.

DELSU Management Issues Safety Directive

Following the security situation, the Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Professor Samuel Asagba, directed students and staff to remain indoors as a precautionary measure.

The directive was issued to protect lives and property while the university management monitored developments and assessed the security situation.

Government Intervention

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori condemned acts of violence associated with the protest and called on security agencies to carry out their duties professionally while respecting the rights of citizens.

The governor assured residents that the state government was working with security agencies and relevant stakeholders to address kidnapping and other criminal activities in Abraka and other parts of the state.

He also urged youths to avoid inflammatory statements on social media and encouraged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist in combating crime.

According to the governor, security agencies have recorded successes in the fight against criminal activities, including the dismantling of some kidnapping syndicates across the state.

Residents, however, continue to call for sustained security efforts, insisting that improved safety remains essential for the growth and development of Abraka as a major university town.

By Ejiyere Peace Residents and community members in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, have called on the government and security agencies to strengthen efforts aimed at addressing rising concerns over kidnapping and other criminal activities in the university town.
