He alleged that the ambulance arrived about 10 minutes after the call because the driver reportedly had difficulty locating the scene.

Emmanuel said some Good Samaritans had already carried the victim on foot to the Medical Centre before the ambulance arrived. Although he expressed gratitude that no life was lost, he described the situation as concerning, noting that delays during emergencies could have serious consequences.

“Ten minutes is enough for someone to give up the ghost,” he said.

Another student, Ozioma Chukwudi, a 100-level Medicine and Surgery student, shared the experiences of two students whom she said encountered challenges while seeking medical attention at the university clinic.

She recounted that one male student, who preferred to remain anonymous, visited the Medical Centre on four different occasions. According to her, he was allegedly unattended to during his first two visits and was given only paracetamol during subsequent visits despite his complaints.

Ozioma also narrated the experience of a female Mass Communication student, who also requested anonymity, saying the student visited the clinic during a serious health crisis but was instructed to sit in a corner instead of receiving immediate attention.

She appealed to medical personnel to show greater care and compassion towards students, noting that many students seek medical help while already dealing with academic and personal pressures.

“Everybody is going through a lot, but we are all trying to stay calm,” she said.

Medical Centre Responds

Responding to the concerns raised by students, Mrs. Gaurisse Akpevwe Success, a staff member of the University Medical Centre, acknowledged that students sometimes experience delays in receiving treatment but attributed the challenge mainly to inadequate medical personnel.

According to her, the university has not employed enough healthcare workers to effectively cater to the growing student population. She explained that nurses provide round-the-clock services, while the pharmacy and records units operate until 6:00 p.m.

She added that between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., two doctors are available at the clinic. However, after that period, doctors are placed on call because many of them also serve as lecturers in the Department of Medicine, which may sometimes result in delays before they arrive.

Reacting to allegations of poor staff attitude and lack of empathy, Mrs. Gaurisse maintained that medical personnel remain committed to providing quality healthcare services to students.

She explained that situations where staff appear strict or raise their voices often occur when patients’ relatives or friends interfere with emergency procedures or fail to cooperate with medical personnel.

She stressed that emergency cases receive priority attention and that patients are treated with care throughout the medical process.

Ambulance Shortage

Speaking on complaints about delayed ambulance response, Mrs. Gaurisse disclosed that the Medical Centre currently has only one functional ambulance serving both Campus 2 and Campus 3.

She explained that the ambulance is also used to transport patients to referral hospitals, making it unavailable at some emergency points.

In such situations, students are advised to bring patients to the clinic through any available means while medical personnel prepare to receive and attend to them.

Mrs. Gaurisse further disclosed that the Medical Centre has repeatedly appealed to the university management for additional healthcare personnel, improved facilities, and more ambulances.

She noted that many challenges experienced by students are linked to limited resources rather than a lack of commitment from medical staff.

She also appealed to the Students’ Union Government (SUG) to support the Medical Centre by presenting students’ concerns and the centre’s challenges to the university management.

According to her, stronger collaboration between students, the SUG, the Medical Centre, and the university management could help improve healthcare services for the DELSU community.

By Daniel Chigozie Some students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have expressed dissatisfaction with healthcare services at the university’s Medical Centre, citing concerns over staff attitude, delayed treatment, and challenges with emergency response.
