Residents of Abraka have expressed growing concern over the rising cases of kidnapping and armed robbery in the community, saying the insecurity has continued to threaten lives and disrupt daily activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although insecurity remains a national challenge, residents noted that Abraka, a university town with a large student population, has not been spared from the wave of criminal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During interviews conducted by this reporter, residents and students described the security situation as increasingly worrisome and called for stronger measures to protect lives and property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Daniel Orikeja, who has lived in Abraka for about 23 years, lamented what he described as a growing culture of indifference among residents whenever criminal incidents occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is a nonchalant attitude towards crime in Abraka. When something happens to a neighbour, people hardly show concern. Everyone simply goes about their normal activities as if nothing happened,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He identified kidnapping and armed robbery as the major security challenges facing the community and urged residents to be more vigilant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone should be a brother\u2019s keeper. If you notice that you have not seen your neighbour for a long time, check on him or her or report your concerns to the nearest police station,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James, a final-year student of Delta State University (DELSU), said persistent security threats have forced many residents and students to change their daily routines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost people now observe unofficial curfews. Many avoid late-night outings and parties, while some residents have even relocated from Abraka because of the insecurity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another student, Caleb, acknowledged the regular presence of police officers carrying out stop-and-search operations on major roads within the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn my way back from school, the motorcycle I boarded was stopped by a police officer who requested to search my bag,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While commending the visible security patrols, Caleb maintained that more comprehensive measures\u2014including improved intelligence gathering, community policing, and quicker responses to distress calls\u2014are necessary to effectively tackle insecurity in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents have appealed to security agencies, community leaders, and relevant government authorities to intensify efforts to curb criminal activities and restore public confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They expressed hope that sustained collaboration among security agencies and members of the community would help improve safety and ensure a more secure environment for students, residents, and businesses in Abraka.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
