Areas that were once predominantly residential now accommodate hospitality establishments that serve as centres for relaxation, social gatherings, and recreational activities.

Residents say the growth of the hospitality industry has contributed to the local economy by creating employment opportunities and attracting visitors from different parts of the state and beyond.

Popular hospitality and entertainment centres in the community include Gordon Resort, Grand Cuba, Picasso, O2 Arena, Gold Step, and several others. These establishments have become regular destinations for students, tourists, and residents seeking accommodation, relaxation, and nightlife.

However, despite the economic benefits, some residents have expressed concerns about the increasing number of hotels and lounges. They cited issues such as noise pollution, security concerns, and changes in the town’s social environment as challenges that require attention.

Mr. Israel Bawo, a long-time resident of Abraka, said the hospitality industry has expanded significantly over the years.

“When I first came to Abraka, there were only a few hotels and lounges. Today, the number has increased because of the growing population and commercial activities associated with the university,” he said.

According to him, the hospitality sector has created jobs for many young people and contributed to the economic development of the community.

“These businesses have attracted more visitors to Abraka and improved social activities within the town,” he added.

Observers believe the continued growth of the hospitality industry presents opportunities for tourism and investment. They, however, stressed the need for improved infrastructure, effective security measures, and proper regulation to address concerns relating to noise, public safety, and environmental management.

As Abraka continues to expand as a university town, many residents believe that balancing economic development with responsible urban planning will ensure that the hospitality sector contributes positively to the community’s growth while preserving the quality of life for residents.

By Luya Ejiroghene Abraka, widely known as a university town, has witnessed rapid growth in its hospitality sector, with the increasing number of hotels, lounges, and recreational centres transforming the community’s social and economic landscape.
