Farmers in Abraka are counting heavy losses after recent flooding submerged farmlands, destroyed crops, and disrupted agricultural activities, raising concerns over food production and the livelihoods of farming households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flooding, caused by several days of heavy rainfall and overflowing streams, affected farms cultivating cassava, vegetables, yam, and other crops. Farmers who invested heavily in the current planting season said they now face an uncertain future as they struggle to recover from the disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during a visit to his farm, local farmer Onyinye Franklin described the flooding as the worst he had experienced in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI borrowed money to cultivate this farm because I expected a good harvest. Now, almost everything has been washed away. I don’t know how I will repay the loan or provide for my family,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another farmer, Grace Joy, whose vegetable farm was completely destroyed, said the flood also damaged irrigation channels and farming equipment, making recovery even more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agricultural extension officers who visited the affected communities described flooding as one of the major challenges confronting crop production in Abraka. They explained that excessive water destroys crops, washes away fertile topsoil, spreads plant diseases, and reduces overall farm productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One extension officer attributed the increasing frequency of flooding to the effects of climate change, noting that unpredictable weather patterns have made farming more challenging for rural households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He encouraged farmers to adopt climate-smart agricultural practices, including improved drainage systems, raised planting beds, and the cultivation of flood-tolerant crop varieties where appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact of the flooding has also extended to local markets. Traders warned that the destruction of crops could reduce the supply of fresh farm produce in the coming weeks, leading to higher prices for staple foods such as vegetables, maize, and cassava.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the rainy season continues, farmers have appealed to the government and relevant agencies to strengthen disaster preparedness by introducing effective early flood warning systems, improving rural infrastructure, and investing in climate-resilient agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They believe such interventions would reduce future losses and improve the resilience of farming communities against the growing effects of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the devastating impact of the floods, many farmers remain hopeful that with support from the government, community organisations, and development partners, they will be able to rebuild their farms and continue contributing to food production in Abraka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
