Traders attributed the increase to higher transportation costs, growing demand, and reduced supplies from farming communities.

Mrs. Esther Oghene, a food trader at the market, said the cost of purchasing food items from wholesalers has increased significantly, forcing retailers to adjust their prices.

“We are not increasing prices to make excessive profit. The cost of bringing food items from farms and major markets has gone up, and we have no choice but to sell at higher prices,” she said.

The rising cost of food has affected many households in the community. Students of Delta State University (DELSU), who make up a large proportion of Abraka’s population, said they now spend more on feeding than they did a few months ago.

Some students noted that the increase in food prices has compelled them to reduce the quantity of food they buy and make changes to their daily feeding habits in order to manage their limited budgets.

An economist in Abraka identified inflation, rising transportation costs, and seasonal fluctuations in agricultural production as some of the major factors responsible for the increase in food prices.

He urged relevant authorities to improve road infrastructure, support local farmers with agricultural inputs, and implement policies that would encourage increased food production and ease the cost of moving farm produce to markets.

Market observers believe that unless food supply improves and transportation costs decline, prices of essential food items may remain high in the coming weeks, placing continued financial pressure on traders, students, and other consumers in Abraka.

By Oghenevwede Godsent Residents of Abraka have expressed concern over the steady increase in the prices of food items in major markets across the town, saying the situation is placing additional pressure on household budgets.
