The newly reconstructed road is expected to improve transportation, reduce the cost of moving agricultural produce, and stimulate commercial activities within Abraka and neighbouring communities.

For several years, the poor condition of the road posed major challenges to farmers, traders, transport operators, and residents. Frequent vehicle breakdowns, high transportation costs, and delays in moving farm produce contributed to post-harvest losses and increased the prices of goods in local markets.

The Delta State Ministry of Works recently announced the completion of the dual carriageway, which links the farming communities of Emu, Obodeti, and Abbi with Abraka and provides easier access to the East–West Road.

According to the Commissioner for Works, the road is expected to strengthen agricultural production and enhance commercial activities across the region.

“This road is an economic corridor for farmers and traders. We expect a reduction in post-harvest losses and lower transportation costs, which will ultimately translate into more affordable goods for consumers,” the commissioner said.

Data from the Delta State Ministry of Transport indicate that more than 500 trucks and about 2,000 commercial vehicles use the Abraka corridor daily. Transport operators say the improved road has significantly reduced travel time between Abbi and Abraka from approximately two hours to about 45 minutes.

Before the reconstruction, trucks transporting agricultural products such as yam, cassava, plantain, and garri spent several hours navigating damaged roads. Drivers incurred high vehicle maintenance costs, while farmers suffered losses as transporters introduced additional charges to cover repairs and delays.

John, a 35-year-old truck driver, said the improvement has transformed his daily operations.

“Fuel consumption has reduced by about 30 percent. Before now, I could only make one trip each day because of the bad road. Now I comfortably make two trips and still return home early,” he said.

Commercial transport operators have also reported lower operating costs. Bus drivers plying the Abraka–Effurun route said passenger fares have dropped from ₦500 to about ₦350 following the completion of the road.

Mallam Suleiman, a commercial bus driver, attributed the reduction to smoother travel conditions.

“The road is much better now. We no longer spend money repairing our vehicles every week because of potholes,” he said.

The improved road network has also benefited traders, food vendors, and students. Fresh agricultural produce now reaches Abraka Market more quickly, reducing spoilage and improving product quality.

Mrs. Blessing, a food vendor near DELSU Site III, said the development has reduced her operating costs.

“Tomatoes and vegetables now arrive fresh instead of spoiling on the road. My weekly food budget has reduced, and students are buying more because prices are becoming more affordable,” she said.

Students have also welcomed the development, noting that commercial vehicles now operate later into the evening, making transportation safer and more convenient.

Business stakeholders believe improved road infrastructure is essential for attracting investment and supporting economic growth. The Ethiope East Chamber of Commerce reports that several new businesses have opened along the road corridor since the project’s completion, reflecting renewed commercial confidence in the area.

The Delta State Government has pledged to carry out routine maintenance on the road and install streetlights before the end of 2026 to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.

Community leaders have commended the project while urging the government to sustain maintenance efforts and improve connectivity with other major highways.

Mr. Emmanuel Omoni, a resident and member of the local landlords’ association, described the project as a major relief for the community.

“We have experienced situations where poor road conditions and flooding affected businesses. We appreciate the government’s intervention and hope regular maintenance will ensure the road remains in good condition,” he said.

Residents, farmers, traders, and transport operators agree that the improved road has enhanced the movement of people and goods, lowered transportation costs, and strengthened commercial activities across Abraka and neighbouring communities, providing renewed optimism for sustained economic growth.

By Okeibunor Peace Chidinma Economic activities in Ethiope East Local Government Area have received a boost following the completion of the 32.5-kilometre Emu–Obodeti–Abbi–Abraka Road by the Delta State Government.
