The young inventor demonstrated how the incubator could maintain a stable temperature suitable for hatching eggs, despite being constructed from inexpensive materials.

Speaking during the presentation, the school’s Principal, Mrs. Stella Oghenekaro, praised the pupil’s creativity, describing the invention as proof that Nigerian children possess exceptional talents capable of solving local problems when properly encouraged.

“This project is beyond a classroom assignment. It shows that innovation does not always require expensive equipment. What this child has achieved with locally available materials deserves recognition. We are rewarding this effort with ₦50,000 to encourage further creativity,” she said.

The announcement was greeted with loud applause from pupils, teachers, and invited guests, many of whom described the achievement as inspiring.

The award-winning incubator was reportedly built over several weeks with the guidance of the school’s Basic Science teacher. The wooden box was carefully designed with ventilation holes, fitted with electric bulbs to provide heat, and included a simple thermometer for monitoring temperature. During the demonstration, the pupil explained how eggs could be placed inside the incubator and turned regularly until they hatch.

Teacher Commends Innovation
The Basic Science teacher, Mr. Emmanuel Akpoveta, said the project began after noticing the pupil’s interest in practical science.

“From the beginning, I noticed this pupil always wanted to understand how machines work. Rather than simply reading about incubators in textbooks, we challenged the class to think of how one could be built with local materials. This particular pupil exceeded every expectation.”

According to him, the project also teaches children that technology is not limited to computers and smartphones but includes practical solutions to everyday challenges.

Parents Express Pride
Parents who attended the exhibition applauded the initiative, saying practical science projects should become a regular feature in schools.

Mrs. Grace Edewor, the pupil’s mother, expressed gratitude to the school for encouraging innovation.

“When my child started gathering pieces of wood and asking questions about bulbs and temperature, I honestly thought it was just another school assignment. Seeing this project become successful and rewarded today has made our entire family proud.”

Another parent, Mr. Paul Odion, urged government agencies and private organizations to sponsor young inventors.

“If children at the primary school level are already producing ideas like this, imagine what they can achieve with proper laboratories, equipment, and mentorship.”

By Vivian Aviara A pupil of Ultimate group of Schools, Abraka, Delta State, has received a cash award of ₦50,000 after designing a functional local incubator using simple materials such as wood, electric bulbs, wire mesh, nails, a thermometer, and locally sourced tools.
