Asagba, has unveiled a series of reforms, including the introduction of 25 new academic programmes, a fully digital school fee payment and clearance system, and infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing academic excellence and student welfare.

Prof. Asagba made the announcement on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, during the “A Journey to Odyssey” programme organised by the DELSU Comrade Community (DCC) at the Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS) 500-Capacity Lecture Hall, where more than 500 students were in attendance.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the university would introduce 25 new academic programmes across several faculties, including the Faculty of Computing and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, to broaden academic opportunities for prospective and returning students.

Although he did not list all the proposed programmes, Prof. Asagba said the initiative forms part of the university’s strategic plan to expand its academic offerings and meet emerging educational and industry demands.

In a major step towards digital transformation, the Vice-Chancellor announced that DELSU’s online portal has been upgraded to enable students to pay school fees electronically from any location, eliminating the need to visit commercial banks.

He further revealed that students would also complete their clearance processes online, significantly reducing delays, paperwork and the financial burden associated with physical clearance.

According to him, the clearance procedure has been streamlined into three major stages, with the new system expected to take effect from the next academic semester.

On infrastructure development, Prof. Asagba disclosed that the university had formally requested the Delta State Government to complete the long-awaited Senate Building project. He expressed optimism that construction would resume following the governor’s approval for the release of funds.

Responding to students’ concerns over hostel conditions, the Vice-Chancellor assured the university community that management had commenced plans to improve hostel maintenance and provide a cleaner, safer and more conducive living environment.

Prof. Asagba also highlighted the university’s recent achievements, stating that DELSU is currently ranked 12th among approximately 290 universities in Nigeria and remains the highest-ranked state university in the South-South and South-East regions.

He noted that the reforms being implemented are designed to strengthen the institution’s academic reputation, improve service delivery and further enhance its national ranking.

The event concluded with the presentation of an Award of Honour to the Vice-Chancellor in recognition of his contributions to the growth and development of the university. He was also conferred with the title of “Student-Friendly Vice-Chancellor” for his commitment to improving student welfare and implementing policies that positively impact the university community.

The programme underscored DELSU’s commitment to academic innovation, digital transformation, infrastructure development and student-centred administration as the institution continues its pursuit of excellence in higher education.

By Ubaka Success The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Prof. Samuel O.
