However, reports of disputes between herders and farmers have heightened fears among rural producers, many of whom say they are becoming increasingly reluctant to cultivate distant farmlands because of security concerns.

Some farmers interviewed said uncertainty over the safety of their farms has led to reduced cultivation, resulting in lower harvests and declining incomes.

“When farmers are afraid to go to their farms, production drops,” said Mr. Efe Umukoro, a local farmer. “The result is less food in the market and higher prices for consumers.”

Market surveys conducted in Abraka indicate that the prices of several agricultural commodities have risen steadily in recent months, a trend traders partly attribute to reduced supplies from farming communities affected by insecurity.

Food vendors and restaurant operators also said the rising cost of farm produce has increased operating expenses, forcing many businesses to adjust the prices of meals and other food items.

For households already struggling with inflation and rising transportation costs, the situation has placed additional strain on family budgets.

Economic analysts warn that the effects of prolonged agricultural insecurity extend beyond food production.

“Agriculture supports transportation, processing, retail trade and many other economic activities,” said economist Dr. Augustine Oghene. “Any disruption in agricultural production affects multiple sectors of the economy and can slow local economic growth.”

The clashes also have implications for employment, as many young people depend on farming, produce transportation and agro-related businesses for their livelihoods. Reduced agricultural activity, stakeholders say, could lead to fewer job opportunities and increased financial hardship.

Traders in Abraka’s major markets reported that fluctuations in food supply have created uncertainty in their businesses. Some retailers said they now spend more time sourcing produce, while others have reduced the quantity of goods they stock because of inconsistent availability.

Beyond agriculture, business leaders warned that persistent insecurity could discourage investment in rural communities, making investors reluctant to establish agro-processing facilities, storage centres and commercial farms in affected areas.

Community leaders have therefore called for stronger security measures, sustained dialogue between herders and farming communities, and policies that promote peaceful coexistence. They argued that lasting solutions are essential to protect lives, safeguard agricultural production and sustain economic growth.

Residents also expressed concern that if the clashes continue, Abraka could witness further increases in food prices, reduced commercial activities and slower economic development.

For many observers, the herders–farmers conflict has evolved beyond a security issue into a significant economic challenge with far-reaching implications for livelihoods, food security and the long-term prosperity of communities across Delta State.

By Okechukwu Oghale Favour Growing concerns over recurring clashes between herders and farming communities in parts of Delta State are raising fresh fears about the economic future of Abraka, as stakeholders warn that prolonged insecurity could reduce agricultural output, increase food prices and weaken local business activity.
