As food prices continue to rise across Nigeria, the Delta State Government has unveiled a series of agricultural initiatives aimed at increasing food production, strengthening food security, and creating employment opportunities for farmers and young people across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration has introduced several programmes to revitalize the agricultural sector. Among them is the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme, which is designed to boost agricultural production, encourage agro-processing, attract private investment, and create sustainable jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state government has also intensified efforts to promote commercial oil palm production through cooperative initiatives, established a \u20a62 billion Agricultural Intervention Fund to support local farmers, and developed large-scale greenhouse farming hubs aimed at modernising the agricultural value chain while reducing post-harvest losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These initiatives are intended to improve farmers’ access to improved seedlings, fertilizers, farm equipment, mechanisation, and financial support. They also seek to encourage crop cultivation\u2014particularly cassava production\u2014support livestock farming to increase protein supply, reduce poverty, create employment, and promote homestead farming across communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of its intervention efforts, the government has continued distributing agricultural inputs, including maize to poultry farmers, to boost local food production and help reduce food costs across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government’s renewed investment in agriculture comes at a critical period when Nigeria continues to grapple with rising food prices and growing concerns over food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts have attributed the country’s food inflation to several factors, including insecurity in farming communities, the high cost of agricultural inputs, poor transportation infrastructure, climate-related challenges, and declining agricultural productivity. These challenges have significantly affected food production, making government intervention increasingly necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite Delta State’s vast fertile land and favourable climate, many farmers still struggle with the rising costs of fertilizers, improved seeds, machinery, transportation, and farm security. These constraints have reduced productivity and discouraged many young people from pursuing agriculture as a viable career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government’s announcement has attracted positive reactions from residents across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to a Delta State Government social media post on agricultural development, a user identified as <\/strong>Alvin Baby wrote: “Cassava, livestock, jobs\u2014Delta dey cook better future.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another user, Darlington-Eguonor Laurent Umurhurhu, welcomed the initiative but raised an important concern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is a good one from Delta State, but the question is: how does the government plan to support rural farmers to contribute to these goals?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comments reflect both optimism and the desire for effective implementation, particularly for farmers in rural communities who form the backbone of agricultural production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students have also expressed support for the government’s agricultural programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joseph Oghenefejiro, a 100-level Mass Communication student at Delta State University (DELSU), described the initiative as a welcome development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If properly implemented, this programme will encourage more young people to participate in agriculture, reduce the cost of food for students, and create employment opportunities for graduates,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks highlight the growing belief that agriculture can become an important source of employment for young people while helping to address Nigeria’s food security challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To further improve agricultural productivity, the Delta State Government has entered into agricultural partnerships with Brazil to promote mechanised farming, large-scale commercial ranching, and improved crop cultivation techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collaboration is expected to introduce modern farming technologies and best practices that will improve productivity, increase farmers’ incomes, and strengthen the state’s agricultural sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In many rural communities across Delta State, agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Abi Community, for example, many elderly men and women depend on cocoyam cultivation as their main source of income. Government interventions that provide improved inputs, funding, and mechanisation are expected to increase productivity, improve household incomes, and encourage greater participation in farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta State University (DELSU) is also playing an important role in promoting agriculture through its Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies (CES).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The centre provides students with practical training in poultry farming, fisheries, agronomy, food processing, agribusiness management, and other agricultural enterprises. Beyond classroom learning, the programme equips students with entrepreneurial skills that encourage self-employment and greater youth participation in agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By exposing students to modern agricultural practices, DELSU is helping to prepare a new generation of agripreneurs capable of contributing to food production and economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Delta State Government’s renewed investment in agriculture reflects a strong commitment to addressing food insecurity, stimulating economic growth, and creating sustainable employment opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If effectively implemented, initiatives such as the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ), the Agricultural Intervention Fund, greenhouse farming projects, and international partnerships have the potential to transform agriculture in the state. Beyond increasing food production, these programmes could improve farmers’ livelihoods, attract private investment, empower young people, and strengthen Delta State’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
