One leaves with excellent grades but no published work. The other has a modest portfolio of news stories, opinion articles, interviews, and multimedia projects published under their name. Both are qualified on paper, but only one has shown editors what they can do.

In today’s media industry, a journalism degree tells employers what you have studied. A digital portfolio tells them what you are capable of producing. While academic qualifications remain essential, they are no longer enough on their own. Increasingly, editors want evidence of curiosity, effort, consistency, and the ability to write stories that matter.

A digital portfolio does more than demonstrate competence; it reflects a student’s commitment to the profession. Every published article, interview, feature, or multimedia project showcases initiative and a willingness to inform, educate, and give a voice to issues that matter. It is evidence that a journalism student has begun contributing to society long before graduation.

The beauty of journalism is that students do not have to wait until graduation to begin practising the profession. Every campus event, community issue, or human-interest story presents an opportunity to report, write, and publish. Each published story becomes another piece of evidence that a student is growing not only academically but professionally.

Ironically, many journalism students already understand the value of building a portfolio but fail to take advantage of the opportunities around them. Campus events, community stories, student elections, and local issues all present chances to practise the craft, yet many wait until graduation before pursuing the byline that could have opened doors while they were still students.

Fortunately, building a digital portfolio no longer requires waiting for employment in a major newsroom. Today’s journalism students have more opportunities than ever to showcase their work. Campus newspapers, online news platforms, personal blogs, podcasts, and professionally managed social media pages can all serve as platforms for publishing stories and developing a visible body of work. Together, these become stepping stones toward building credibility and professional confidence.

From an editor’s perspective, a portfolio often speaks louder than a list of academic achievements. It demonstrates initiative, consistency, and the ability to meet real publishing standards. A student who has already written, revised, and published stories enters the newsroom with practical experience that cannot always be measured by examination results alone.

Every journalism student will leave university with a certificate. The question is whether they will also leave with a body of work that reflects their passion, growth, and commitment to the profession. In journalism, your first byline should not be an afterthought—it should be the beginning of your career.

By Nurhie Great Two journalism students graduate from the same university with the same degree.
